Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University commonly known as TNFU is a 20th-century university established in 2012 situated in Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu, India under Tamil Nadu Fisheries University Act, 2012. The college formerly known as Tamilnadu Fisheries University was then renamed after the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Dr. J. Jayalalithaa. The college has a number of Institutes/ para-professional institutes operating under it, namely Fisheries College and Research Institute, Dr. M.G.R. Fisheries College and Research Institute, Dr. M.G.R. Fisheries College and Research Institute, College of Fisheries Engineering, TNFU Business School (Fisheries), College of Fish Nutrition & Food Technology, Madhavaram Milk Colony, and Para-professional Institute of Fishing Technology.

TNFU offers various professional/vocational degree programmes in Fisheries Science such as Bachelor of Fisheries Science (B.F.Sc.), B.Tech. (Fisheries Engineering), B.Tech. (Energy & Environmental Engineering), B.Tech. (Biotechnology), B.B.A. (Fisheries Business Management), B.Tech. (Food Technology), B.Voc. (Industrial Fish Processing Technology), B.Voc. (Industrial Aquaculture), B.Voc. (Industrial Fishing Technology), B.Voc. (Aquatic Animal Health Management), M.B.A. (Fisheries Enterprises Management), Master of Fisheries Science (M.F.Sc.) and Ph.D. in Fisheries Science. The university is providing financial support to the students in the form of scholarships and fellowships for undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes. Students' amenities such as gymnasiums, indoor and outdoor game facilities, hostels and many other student-friendly facilities such as computer, internet and e-learning facilities and student placement cells are available in university colleges to promote students' interests in acquiring knowledge on various aspects of fisheries science as well as in finding a right placement for them. The college provides ambient facilities for the students during their time in college in order to set the environment for pleasant learning. The infrastructure provided by the college includes laboratories, library, transport, hostel, auditorium, cafeteria etc. The college library has a number of titles and references for the student's reference, apart from these there are a number of national and international journals, publications, magazines, articles and many more. TNFU provides separate laboratories for each and every department giving equal practical exposure to the students. Transportation facilities are available at the college which is really helpful for the students not residing inside the campus. Staff working at the college can also use the transportation facility present. Hostel facilities are available for both boys and girls with all the basic amenities present. Separate hostels are situated for boys and girls inside the college premises itself. The college has a huge auditorium for conducting cultural programs1, conferences, guest lectures seminars etc. The canteen present on the campus provides delicious meals in a hygienic manner. Food in the canteen is available in a reasonable price range.

TNFU has a detailed explanation on the eligibility for the UG, PG and research programs for the candidates referenced who are interested to apply. 

Course Eligibility
UG
  • Candidates should have passed in the Higher Secondary Course in 10+2 in a state board/ CBSE/ any other examination recognized as equivalent thereto with a minimum of 50% marks
PG
  • Entrance Examination will be conducted discipline wise to fill the seats. According to the merit, seats will be filled with Tamil Nadu candidates. 
  • Candidates with an OGPA of 2.75 out of 4.00 under the trimester system or 6.5 out of 10.0 under the semester system or 65 percent under the semester system or 65% aggregate in the Master’s degree alone are eligible to apply for admission to a Ph.D. degree course in Fisheries Science. A minimum pass is sufficient for SC / ST candidates 
  • Candidates with four years B.F.Sc. and M.F.Sc. degree in the concerned field of specialization (as given in the table below) from a State Agricultural University or Central University recognized by the ICAR shall alone be eligible to apply. 
  • Candidates who have graduated in one discipline at the masters' level can apply for admission to the same or closely related disciplines as given below.
MBA
  • Candidates who have appeared for the final examination of any Undergraduate Course of a UGC recognized University including Deemed University under any stream and awaiting results. 
  •  Candidates who have passed the final examination of any Undergraduate Course of any UGC recognized University under any stream viz., Arts, Science, Commerce, Engineering, Agriculture, Veterinary, Fisheries and Medicine etc.,
Ph.D
  • The candidates should have a Master’s Degree from a recognized university in a relevant stream.

Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University Admission:

The candidates willing to apply to TNFU can follow the procedure below for applying to the college. Candidates fulfilling the eligibility criteria shall be selected on the basis of merit for admission to UG Courses. For Admission to M.Tech, M.F.Sc and Ph.D., a separate Entrance Exam shall be conducted by the University. Eligible candidates shall be called for counselling according to their rank.

Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University Hostel:

Hostels for the students are available on each campus and the messes are run on a dividing system. The students will be accommodated in the hostels to the extent possible, subject to availability. A sum of Rs. 10,000/- will be collected as a hostel deposit (Refundable)

  • The university has provided two hostels for the students, one for the boys and girls
  • The boy's hostel is located on the main campus
  • Tamil Nadu Fisheries University Facilities at hostel provides mess facilities too
