The Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship was established in 1983 by Lt. Monmathanath Chakraborty. Manmathanath Chakravarty, the famous photographer laid the foundation of 'The Indian School of Art' at 240A, Bowbazar Street, Calcutta with just three students. Mr. Shyamlal Chakraborty, his brother, took the chair of Principal of the School. The technical teaching aspect got obliterated slowly and steadily, syllabus contained Drawing, Painting, Commercial Art as well as Engraving, Photography, Sculpture and Art Painting and allied subjects. Degree course was introduced in 'Indian Art College'.The college has been enlisted under Sec. 2(f) and 12(b) of the U.G.C. act in 2004. The college is affiliated to Rabindra Bharati University. The college offers a bachelor's degree in painting, sculpture, applied art, and graphics.

The college offers the following courses leading to the Degree under the Rabindra Bharati University, Bachelor of Fine Arts (Faculty of Visual Arts) in Painting, Applied Art, Sculpture, Graphics - Print Making. Course duration 4 years (i.e. Eight Semesters) with specialization in Painting / Sculpture / Applied Art / Graphics - Print Making, also students will have to take up anyone as a Generic Elective subject (G.E.) of 200 marks each as per CBCS syllabus structure of the UGC guidelines. This is an Honours programme equivalent to Honours Degree courses as per UGC regulation and since 1996 the degree, Bachelor of Fine Arts is provided by Rabindra Bharati University.

The Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship UG Admission – eligibility and criteria
To get admission into the post-graduation Course the candidate must have passed his/her Higher Senior Secondary examination (10+2) with set of a particular subjects, from a recognized education board. Some of the eligibility criteria is as follows,

- Candidates having passed the H.S. Examination or its equivalent with special aptitude in the concerned subject are eligible to apply.
- Candidates willing to apply for more than one subject will have to apply separately for day and evening section. The candidate may also apply a maximum of 4 specialized subjects in the separate application form.
- Break of Studies: 2 years i.e the candidates who have passed H.S or its equivalent in the year 2020, 2019 & 2018 are only eligible to apply.
- PAINTING, APPLIED ART, GRAPHICS – PRINT MAKING, SCULPTURE are available as specialized subjects for the Day and Evening Section. Kindly Note: Graphics - Print Making subject is not available in Evening Section.
- Cast certificate for S.C /S.T /O.B.C. is validate, if it is issued only by the Government of West Bengal.

- No student will participate in, abet, or propagate ragging in the College campus as per the order of the Honorable Supreme Court.
- Candidates admitted elsewhere in any degree course must submit a certificate or any other relevant document showing cancellation from the said degree course at the time of admission. Failing which, his/her candidature will be treated as canceled.
- No candidate will be allowed for admission to two or more concurrent degree courses in the same University (regular/external) in the same calendar year.
- Candidates interested in admission will be required to collect all information regarding interview/test and admission dates in this regard from the College Website: www.indianartcollege.com
- Admission of a candidate will be canceled if any information given by him/her is found to be wrong or suppressed.
- Submission of Application Forms for admission does not imply any right to admission and selection for admission.
- The list of the Candidates selected for interview/written test /admission will generally be treated as canceled as soon as the corresponding last date is over.
- In case of any disputes, the decision of the College Authority will be final and binding to all concerned.
- Candidates are requested to keep the following documents ready, which will be required at the later stage.
