UPSC IES recruitment 2024 has three stages in the selection process which will consist of the (preliminary & main examination & Personality test). The recruitment will be done for category A and B posts. The question paper will be set in English only.

UPSC IES/ ESE 2024 Selection Procedure
Candidates are required to qualify for all three stages of the UPSC IES 2024 exam. There will be a Preliminary exam, a main exam and a Personality test. All these three tests/ stages will be qualifying in nature. Recruitment will be done for the following categories for Group A/ B posts.
- Category I - Civil Engineering
- Category II - Mechanical Engineering
- Category III - Electrical Engineering
- Category IV - Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering.
Preliminary Exam - Stage 1
- The preliminary exam will be stage 1 of 200 marks consisting of the objective question.
- Candidates who are eligible for the Preliminary exam in the year only those candidates will be qualified for the Main Exam in that year.
Main Exam - Stage 2
- The main exam will be stage 2 of the procedure consisting of a Conventional Type Paper of 300 marks.
- The candidates will be shortlisted for the Engineering Services (Main/Stage-II) Examination based on the criteria of minimum qualifying marks in the Preliminary/Stage-I Examination.
- Note: In the objective-type question there will be a negative marking for each wrong answer (-0.33).
Personality Test
- The 3rd stage will be the Personality Test of the procedure consisting of a Conventional Type Paper of 200 marks.
- In the Personality Test, special attention will be on the candidate’s capacity for leadership, initiative and intellectual curiosity, tact and other social qualities, mental and physical energy, powers of practical application and integrity of character.
- Note: Candidates are not allowed to take the help of a scribe to write the answers for them, they should write the paper from their hand.
For PWD Candidates
- However, blind candidates and candidates with Locomotor Disability and Cerebral Palsy (minimum of 40% impairment) will be allowed to write the Engineering Services Examination with the help of a scribe.
- Compensatory time of twenty minutes per hour shall be permitted for blind candidates and candidates with Locomotor Disability and Cerebral Palsy (minimum of 40% impairment) will also be allowed in the Engineering Services Examination.
- The Commission has the discretion to fix minimum qualifying marks in any or all the papers of the examination.
- A deduction of up to five per cent of the maximum marks for the written papers will be made for illegible handwriting.
