MERI Kolkata is a government college thus the options while choosing a company is limited. The training program takes place in the last semester on board in a vessel your company owns. A few companies that come for placements are NYK, MSC, Fleet Management, SCI, Anglo-Eastern. A sum of INR 15-25000 is paid per month during the training and packages can go up to INR 50-60000 per month. The alumni network for this college is very strong. Your alumnus will treat you like family.

The college offers a hostel based programme. Every year has a separate hostel. Expect for the second year hostel the rest are well maintained. Hostel fees are included in course fee. Meals are also included in the course fee. Free Wi-Fi, proper labs, spacious classrooms a Library that stay open till 8.

Just like any other bachelor's course, you need to apply for college while you are a Class 12th pass. You need to apply through website imu.edu.in where you will get the dates for the exams and other specific details regarding the course. On the website, during the end of a year, the admission forms are available for the entrance exam that goes by the name IMU-CET. Class 12th marks do not affect the selection. It's completely based on the CET results.

Daily classes take place from morning 9:30 am to 5:00 pm in the evening with a lunch break at 1:00. Saturday's and Sunday's are off. The quality of teaching is average in the first year but from the second year, it gets quite serious. Labs and technology aided teaching are done here. Overall with the library, labs and officers, studying gets interesting.

The course fee for B.Tech is INR 2.25 lakh per year and the course is for 4 years at Marine Engineering and Research Institute, Kolkata. A performance-based scholarship is given every semester. The topper gets INR 1 lakh per semester. The next 29 get INR 75000 and the next 30 get INR 50000. Loans are easy to get from the SBI branch beside the college at low-interest rates.

As the number of students in the college is less that is 4 batches of 280 students each, a number of clubs are limited. Cultural and sports are the two major ones. The TEMPEST is the name of the annual fest that takes place in the college. You can find them on Facebook and YouTube. College is like quite strict in the first year but overall it prepares you for what awaits you in life
