What is NMMS?
NMMS stands for the National Merit Cum Means Scholarship. It is a government-sponsored scheme first launched in May 2008 to provide financial assistance for students from economically backward classes who are exceptionally good at studies. Under the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) research, the dropout rate was high in secondary school, i.e., 9th and 10th class, nearly 17% higher than the elementary and upper secondary.
A total of 100,000 NMMS scholarships is awarded every year to deserving class 8th students by MHRD, Government of India. SCERT or education departments conduct the NMMS exam in offline mode at the state level. For the NMMS scholarship, students must pass 8th with a minimum of 55% to be eligible; however, private schools, NVS, KVS, and Sainik Schools do not qualify for the scholarship.
