Basanti Devi College, named after Basanti Devi Ji, an Indian independence activist during the British rule in India, was the first Government-sponsored college for women in Kolkata to be founded by the Government of West Bengal in 1959. A renowned freedom fighter, Basanti Devi, the wife of Sri Chittaranjan Das, was the first Indian lady to be imprisoned under British Rule for her involvement in the Indian freedom struggle whereas Sri Chittaranjan Das was the political mentor of Subhash Chandra Bose.

Basanti Devi College, Kolkata is located at the junction of the urban and rural cluster, this premier college caters to the needs of girl students from both urban and rural areas. A large of girl students are also from backward classes, minority communities and from below the poverty line.

College notifies a few important notes - 

The student including up an Honours subject also studies two general (Elective) subjects; two mandatory languages: English and Bengali/Alt. English (in 1st yr); and the subject 'Environmental Studies' (in the 3rd yr); Interested B.A. / B.Sc. students want to take part in the NCC (National Cadet Corps) or the NSS (National Social Service) requested to initiate from the first year; B.A. Honours course in Sociology introduced from the Academic Session: 2012-2013, the course is affiliated under the University of Calcutta.

For Post-Graduation Course:

M.A. in English & M.A. in Political Science introduced from the Academic Session (2013-2014). The course is affiliated under the University of Calcutta and Semester system (Total 4 Semesters).

Additionally, College offers a few certifications courses:

• Two(2) years Diploma course in Computer application conducted by WEBEL INFORMATICS LTD.
• Six(6) month certificate course in functional English.
• One(1) year certificate course in the French Language in collaboration with The School of Languages, Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture.
• Six(6) months certificate course (Basic & Advance) in Psychological counselling in collaboration with Jadavpur University.

• Dr.Puripriya Kundu of the Department of Sanskrit has had her book, Chauryasamiksha mentioned in Aajkaal dated 8.2.2015, as one of the notable new entries in the Kolkata Book Fair, 2015. The book has also been reviewed in the Bengali daily, Saptahik Bartaman dated 14.3.2015.

• Students applying for Honours and General courses in Basanti Devi College must make sure that they have secured pass marks in all subjects in their previous examinations.

• Students applying for Economics (Honours) and Statistics (Honours) must have secured pass marks in Mathematics at the H.S. or equivalent examination.
