Basanti Devi College, named after Basanti Devi Ji, an Indian independence activist during the British rule in India, was the first Government-sponsored college for women in Kolkata to be founded by the Government of West Bengal in 1959. A renowned freedom fighter, Basanti Devi, the wife of Sri Chittaranjan Das, was the first Indian lady to be imprisoned under British Rule for her involvement in the Indian freedom struggle whereas Sri Chittaranjan Das was the political mentor of Subhash Chandra Bose.
Basanti Devi College, Kolkata is located at the junction of the urban and rural cluster, this premier college caters to the needs of girl students from both urban and rural areas. A large of girl students are also from backward classes, minority communities and from below the poverty line.

Students applying for Honours and General courses in Basanti Devi College must make sure that they have secured pass marks in all subjects in their previous examinations.
