It is a State University in Orissa, recognized by UGC. The admissions to courses like LLB, MA, MBA, M.Sc, etc are done on the basis of OJEE/GATE/GPAT and other admission entrance exams.

Berhampur University is now shifted to Bhanja Bihar, named after Kabisamrat Upendra Bhanja, a famous poet from Orissa. The university has an area of about 250 acres. It offers numerous post-graduate programs and specialized subjects. UG courses are available only for distance education.
