Fees & Scholarships :
Since I'm a low merit fee student, the tuition fee is Rs 35,000 per year. But besides the tuition fee, there is admission fee which comes around 2500(yearly), exam fee(Each 6 months) around 2200 and other fees including Senate, Alumni etc comes around Rs 1000.
So yearly, a total of 40,000 is required for a merit low fee student. For high merit students, the fee is Rs 70,000 per year.
There is also a reduction in fee for students who comes at first 3 positions for each branch. All they have to pay is 1000 instead of 35000 per year.
Our college's eligible students to get their scholarship each year. It includes e-grantz and Merit Cum Means scholarship.
Students who are eligible for e-grantz will be provided with hostel fee and tuition fee. While merit cum means scholarship is given to students belonging to minority community.
They provide Rs 25,000 for tuition fee and 5000 for hostel fee per year. Students with back papers are not eligible for this scholarship while e-grantz is applicable to all students.
But, e-grantz is not a good help for students from communities other than SC/ST. Percentage of students receiving MCM scholarship is 25% only per year since back papers are a matter in MCM.
But, e-grantz is received by almost all students and it comes around 80%. For those who are not benefited from MCM and those who do not belong to SC/ST cast, they have to pay their fee by themselves.
For those who are needed loans, it is better to avail loans from nearest government controlled banks since they provide interest fee loans throughout the course and an additional of one year along with it.
The initial processes are quite difficult as it requires course fee receipt and other such documents from the college.
But once it is processed, it is quite easy to get the amount as cheque or it can be directly deposited to the college account.
Entrance Exams & Admissions :
College of Engineering Munnar(CEM) is an aided college which is partially run by Government.
So it is quite difficult to get an admission in there. The admission of students is based on the rank secured in Kerala Engineering Entrance Exam(KEAM).
The cutoff for students belonging to different Religion is for different. For students belonging to SC/ST(Scheduled Cast) category, the cutoff was around rank 50,000 during 2017.
For Muslim students, it was 20,000. For other categories, it was 15,000. Followed by the trial allotment, 3 main allotments were there as a part of Kerala entrance exam.
After each allotment, the student has to present directly at the institution to confirm their admission.
Once a student has shown some interest in the hallowed institution, the admission and allotment procedure is terminated right there.
After that, information regarding the course, starting date, uniform, admission fee, exam fee etc, will be provided by the college.
Placements & Internships :
Every year, our college provides an internship usually of one week to interested students. But those internships do not offer any stipend.
Other than the internship from my college, I have done two internships from BSNL and HCL CDC on Basic Telecom Networks and Embedded Systems respectively.
One of the other reasons I chose my college is because of the placements they offer. For students who likes to work at top software companies, CEM is a good platform.
But does not offer the same placement for other streams like Mechanical or Electrical. Among the companies that usually pay a visit to our college, the notable ones are Infosys, Speridian, Wipro and 6D Technologies.
The salary package they offer during training period is usually around Rs 21,000.
The percentage of students got placed from CSE branch is higher compared to other branches. It comes around 60% for CSE, 50% for ECE and 35% for both Mechanical and EEE every year.
Alumni network in our college is not stronger compared to other colleges.
Academics & Faculty :
Classes starts at 9 am and ends at 4 pm with a one hour break and six periods.
There are no classes on Sundays and Saturdays. Since the entire course is semester wise, there is a final exam at the end of each semester with two series exams before it.
The internal marks are calculated based on the marks scored in these two series exams and the three assignments given along the semester. Assignments are based on the topics which are not on the syllabus but are related to it.
During the third semester, we have done some micro projects to familiarise the design of PCB and some hobby circuits although it is not a part of our curriculum.
The mini project was during the fifth semester and since it was not that difficult all the designing and fabrication was done during the same semester.
While the main project design was during the seventh semester and the implementation was in the final semester.
The method of teaching for ECE department was quite different from other branches since our HOD wants everything to be perfect.
Our department includes permanent and experienced staffs only while other departments may have younger staffs. Thus the quality of teaching is better in ECE department and only what they have taught during the class will be asked for the exam.
Their teaching also helps us in understanding the importance of everything in the real world. The main reason why I chose my college is because of the place where it located.
Munnar is a tourist attracted place and the college is located on a hill with a beautiful garden surrounding it. Since it is a high range place, it is always cold in there.
The teachers are too friendly that we can approach them whenever it is necessary. The department provides necessary freedom to the students and we have the voice to suggest our opinions.
College Infrastructure & Hostel Facilities :
The college provides separate hostels for boys and girls. There are two teachers staying at each hostel other than the warden and remaining teachers are staying at a different hostel.
The college hostel fee is very less compared to outside hostels and it comes around Rs 3500. The fee may get reduced based on the number of stay at the hostel.
There are two other hostels which also offers accommodation for girls at a fixed price, but they are not near to the college. Their cost is fixed and it will not get reduced based on the number of stays and it comes around Rs 4000 per month.
College canteen food is much better than the one at the hostel as it offers non-veg items every day at a reasonable price. A single meal costs 30 and breakfast cost 16.
College WiFi is available from morning 8.30 to evening 6. Girls hostel does not offer free WiFi while boys hostel does. Our college provides a separate library with three floors and two computer labs.
Each classroom are well designed with comfortable seats. An attractive large auditorium and an appropriate seminar is another feature of our college. Our mess hall is large enough to accommodate all students simultaneously.
Clubs & Associations :
Almost all IEEE events are held at our college. There is a student society for each department and it provides a platform for sharing ideas, connecting students and implementing ideas.
Other than these, these a dance and music club where the interested students can interact and plan big events for the coming events.
There is the National Service Scheme Union to volunteer activities and a placement cell to give necessary hospitality for the students and delegates.
Each year a three days art festival namely Illiad is held at our college to evaluate students performance and to give the eligible students a chance to participate at the university level.
The sports events are held for one week with athletics and sports. Tech fest and other such events are planned by the students and we have conducted a smaller one at 2014.
The life in college is not that excellent as everyone is trying to get a higher rank and competing for each other.
