Madurai Kamaraj University was established in the year 1965 by the government of Tamil Nadu and the University grants commission.  The University has 21 academic centers and 21 quasi-academic supportive units. It has 24 autonomous colleges, 14 aided colleges, 33 self-financing colleges, 18 approved institutions, 4 evening colleges, 6 constituent colleges, and one University College catering to the higher education needs of the students.

Madurai Kamaraj University: Directorate of Distance Education, MKU-DEE for short, is located in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. It was established in 1971 and is part of the Madurai Kamaraj University. The University is recognized by University Grants Commission and is a member of the Association of Indian University [AIU]. Moreover, it has also been reaccredited with Grade 'A' by NAAC.

MKU DDE aims to make education reach all sections of society. The main goal is to provide quality education and career development facility to the working class at affordable fees. The institute also arranges contact classes at selected centers on Saturdays and Sundays. There is a 100% tuition fee exemption for physically challenged students and a half fee concession for defense employees.

Madurai Kamaraj University: Directorate of Distance Education offers 160 courses at the undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, and certificate levels. MKU DEE Admission is based on merit and scores in the qualifying exams. The institute has been given the status of University with Potential for Excellence by the UGC. Initially, MKU DDE was known as the Institute of Correspondence Course & Continuing Education [ICC&CE] and was later renamed to Directorate of Distance Education in 1996.
