Infrastructure Facilities at the Dr SS Bhatnagar Institute of Chemical Engineering & Technology, [UICTE] Chandigarh:
- The Institute has independent facilities for imparting instructions in all subsidiary subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and basic engineering courses in Mechanical, Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The Institute has well-equipped laboratories in all the subjects of basic sciences like Physics, Organic, Inorganic and Physical Chemistry besides Organic, Inorganic Technology labs and Workshops.
- The Institute has state of the art equipment in Unit Operations, Process Dynamics and Control, Reaction Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Petroleum Processing, Low-Temperature Engineering, Bio-Chemical Engineering and Alternative Energy Technology laboratories. Also, unique facility of a Pilot Plant exists in the Institute.
- This plant provides facilities for testing technical feasibility of chemical processes and it is equipped with fully automatic packaged boiler, reverse osmosis system, electro dialysis system, rotary kiln, split flow, U-tube heat exchanger, gasifier and many other types of equipment. A corning glass Liquid-Liquid Extraction unit having both packed bed and sieve tray column has been installed. Analytical facilities such as gas chromatograph, UV-spectrophotometer, HPLC, flame photometer, etc. are also available.
Computer Laboratory
- The Institute is endowed with one of the best computer labs in the country. It has 80 computers (Pentiums). The laboratory is linked by modem to the main Computer Centre of the University. Students have the option of mastering software concerning general usage (PC Tools, XT pro), scientific languages (Fortran, Pascal), advanced languages (C, C++), word processing (WS-2000), business (D-BASE), design (CAD) and Chemical Engineering (CAPS) software.
Library
- The Institute has well-furnished library having about 10,453 books and subscribes to over 19 Indian and foreign journals for the exclusive use of the students and faculty of the Institute.
Consultancy
- Several faculty members of the Institute have been actively involved in rendering consultancy to industrial organisations in the region. The consultancy activities include preparation of feasibility reports, development of pollution control technologies, energy auditing of industrial units, development of alternative and more economical technologies for industrial units, corrosion prevention analysis of industrial products, development of new products/ processes of laboratory scale and recovery of chemicals from agro-based effluents.
Research Laboratories
- The Institute has well-equipped research laboratories in some front-line areas such as chemical engineering thermodynamics, environmental engineering, carbon chemistry, polymer science and engineering, membrane technology, solvent extraction, electro-chemistry, etc. A number of sponsored research projects have been successfully completed, while others are presently in progress.
Placement
- The Institute invites chemical and allied industries located all over the country for interviewing the final year B.E. (Chemical), B.E. (Food Technology), M.E. (Chemical), M.Sc. (Industrial Chemistry) students for placement. The Institute has an excellent placement record with packages rising as high as 11.5 lakhs and the average package being 4.2 lakhs.
Research Facility
- The Institute is well equipped for research work leading to a PhD degree. Facilities exist particularly in areas like Thermodynamic and Thermo-Physical Properties; Reaction Engineering; Environmental Engineering; Heat and Mass Transfer; Non-Conventional Energy Tech.; Science and Technology of Carbon; Polymer Science and Engineering; Agro-residues; Multiphase Complex Flow Hydrodynamics; Food Processing and Non-Conventional Separation Techniques.

College Infrastructure & Hostel Facilities : There are 9 hostels present in Dr. SS Bhatnagar Institute of Chemical Engineering & Technology and hostels are common for all the Punjab University students. You need to have the good rank to get hostels. The hostel fees are Rs. 630 per month and the food cost Rs. 30 per meal. Classrooms are old but it is well equipped with everything required. Labs are fully equipped with all machines. Wi-Fi is available with high speed. The PG is easily available outside the campus which varies from Rs. 2,500 to Rs. 7,500.
Entrance Exams & Admissions : You need to have at least 60% in PCM in order to be eligible for applying to this course at Dr. SS Bhatnagar Institute of Chemical Engineering & Technology. You have to give JEE MAIN exam and the selection would be done on the basis of JEE MAIN rank. The cutoff is generally 53-55k.
Placements & Internships : I have done my internship in two companies one being in pharmaceutical and the other in powder coating industry. Most companies select for Graduation Engineer Trainee, Trade analyst etc at Dr. SS Bhatnagar Institute of Chemical Engineering & Technology. Companies specialized in core chemical company like RIL, Vedanta, Cairn, UOP comes for placement. Top consultancies like ZS Associates, MU Sigma, EXL comes for recruitment. The average salary is around Rs. 5.50 - 6 lakhs. The average package offered is Rs. 5.72 lakhs. Around 75-80% students get placed each year. This being one of oldest college specifically for Chemical Engineering, the alumni network is quite good.
Fees & Scholarships : The course fee at Dr. SS Bhatnagar Institute of Chemical Engineering & Technology for BE Chemical Engineering is around Rs. 16000 per year which is quite low. Punjab University offers various types of scholarship which help poor students. As fees are quite low which has to be paid in two installments so the loan is not required.
Academics & Faculty : Classes generally start from 9 am-5 pm at Dr. SS Bhatnagar Institute of Chemical Engineering & Technology. The assignment and projects burden are quite low so you have ample times to discover yourself and do various other activities. Most of the teachers are Ph.D. holders and have good knowledge about their subjects. Almost all the teachers have some knowledge about every subject so this helps students in many ways.
Clubs & Associations : There are various Chemical Engineering societies and many clubs such as dance, literary, music, quiz, sports, etc are held in Dr. SS Bhatnagar Institute of Chemical Engineering & Technology. The name of the college fest is CYANIDE and besides this, there are various other fests that are organized by different departments and university. The life in college is awesome.

College Infrastructure & Hostel Facilities : Hostels again have nominal rent. Hostel fee is Rs. 475 per month. For For food there are two mess and one canteen. You have to pay according to the diet you eat. Diet is also subsidized.So on an average the expenses of food are around Rs.3000 per month. Food is of good quality. 24 hour free wifi facility is available in all the hostels and also in the college. Currently nearly 90 percent of the students in the need of the hostel get the hostel easily. More hostels are coming up.
Academics & Faculty : Class Timings are from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. The best part is that Dr. S.S.Bhatnagar University institute of chemical engineering & technology, Panjab University, Chandigarh( SSBUICET) started in 1958. So we have got many experienced teachers. The quality of teaching has been seen throughout. So the lecturers of core subjects of chemical engineering are very informative and interesting here. What is lacking here is the support staff for non-core subjects which are equally important. The faculty for teaching non-core subjects is not at all good. That is an area of improvement for sure. But overall great college for learning chemical engineering.
Fees & Scholarships : The best part of the college SSBUICET is that the course fees of the Chemical Engineering program are just Rs. 15000 per year. That means the whole chemical engineering degree can be completed in just Rs. 60000. So if you compare it with other engineering colleges, for that matter even govt. Engineering colleges you will realize it is among the lowest. Still there are scholarships available for EWS,SC,ST. On an average, I think 5-15 students from one class get the scholarship.
Placements & Internships : I interned in Haldor Topsoe, NCR. IT is a technology license. Learned the designing of Heat exchangers, pumps, columns here. Many core companies along with some consultancy and IT companies visit the campus every year. Average package is around 5-5.25 lakh. And percentage placement is around 70-80 percent. I am listing below some of the regular recruiters: UOP Honeywell, Technip, Bechtel, Simon India, ZS Associates, Exl services, Reliance India Limited, Reliance Petrochemicals, Jubilant Life Sciences, SRF limited, Chambal Fertilizers, Hmel, Trident, Saint-Gobain, Sun pharma,Vedanta Resources,Infosys. These are major companies only. Also, the PSUs are recruiting through Gate now so they no longer visit the college campus. Alumni network is very strong.
Clubs & Associations : As the college is in the Chandigarh and in the Panjab University campus so there are ample opportunities available for the students. Enactus student chapter of Chandigarh is there in the college itself , every year our college bags top 3 position in the national Enactus competition. Apart from this many student societies, social , cultural clubs are there like Rotaract, Make a difference,etc. So all in all life in the university campus is the best. You have the best library here, lush green campus. Apart from that college is in Chandigarh so you can enjoy a lot here. Along with that the best coaching centers for CAT, IAS are present in Chandigarh.
Entrance Exams & Admissions : To get admission into SSBUICET , Chandigarh you need to score good in the entrance examination AIEEE Exam currently known as JEE MAINS. When I joined in 2012 the last rank was 22000 For general category. Also No state quota is there. Currently you can get admission up to AIR 50000.
