Overview

Garhbeta College was established on 13th August 1948, under the leadership of Late Govinda Kumar Singha, the founding secretary of the college. The college began its journey at Banerjeedanga High School with only 50 students. On 12th February 1950, it moved to its own campus, made possible by generous land donations: 2.54 acres from local freedom fighter Late Basanta Kumar Sarkar and 9.56 acres from the Midnapore Zamindar Company. The college has since been committed to providing higher education to students from Paschim Medinipur and the neighboring districts of Bankura and Hooghly.

In its 75 years of existence, Garhbeta College has made significant progress, transforming from a humble beginning under a corrugated shade to a thriving institution. The college now has expansive buildings, well-equipped laboratories with modern instruments, and all the necessary amenities for higher education. Initially affiliated with the University of Calcutta, the college offered Arts and Commerce courses at the intermediate level. In 1957, it received affiliation up to the B.A. (Pass) level, followed by B.Sc. (Pass) in 1960, and honours courses in Mathematics and History in 1964. Later, the University of Calcutta granted affiliation for B.Com (Pass), Zoology (Pass), and Botany (Pass) in 1982 and 1983.

In 1985, Garhbeta College was affiliated with Vidyasagar University, marking a key milestone in its development. The college has continued to expand its academic offerings and now provides honours courses in fourteen subjects across Arts, Science, and Commerce, along with the newly introduced Santali honours. The college also offers four postgraduate courses in Bengali (M.A.), History (M.A.), Mathematics (M.Sc.), and Zoology (M.Sc.). Additionally, it runs a vocational course (O.M.S.P.) and two professional courses—B.P.Ed. (N.C.T.E. approved) and BCA (AICTE approved).

These achievements reflect the college's dedication to providing accessible higher education to local students. The college has an active research culture in several departments, with alumni staying engaged in further studies and research. In line with its mission to make education available to all, Garhbeta College also hosts the Netaji Subhas Open University Study Centre on its campus. Garhbeta College Admission

Garhbeta College offers undergraduate degree programs in Science, Commerce, Arts, Computer Science, and Physical Education. To be eligible for admission, candidates must have completed the 10+2 or an equivalent examination from a recognized board.

Admission to B.Sc. courses are based on merit from the qualifying examination, followed by counselling. For BCA, selection is also based on merit. B.Com (Hons) offers direct admission. B.P.Ed. Admissions are determined through an entrance test, which includes a written test, sports proficiency test, physical fitness test, and the marks obtained in the qualifying examination.

Criteria:

• Candidates with at least 45% marks in Mathematics at the 10+2 level in either Arts or Science stream are eligible for the B.Com program, provided they also have a minimum overall aggregate of 45% marks.
• For students from the Commerce stream, a minimum of 50% marks in Accountancy is required to qualify for the B.Com program.
• Students who have completed 10+2 with Computer Applications, Statistics, or Business Mathematics are also eligible to apply for the BCA program.
• Any student who remains absent for 15 consecutive working days after the commencement of classes, without valid justification, will have their studentship canceled.

Candidates wishing to apply for admission to Garhbeta College can submit their applications online by visiting the college's official website. Admission is based on merit and conducted through institute-level counselling. Candidates must bring both self-attested photocopies and original copies of all necessary documents for the counselling process. The required documents include:
