Mahishadal Raj College founded in August 1946, by Kumar Debaprasad Gagra Bahadur the "Raja" of Mahishadal, is the third oldest college in the undivided Midnapore district and the fiftieth under the University of Calcutta. It became affiliated with Vidyasagar University. Located 20 km from both Haldia and Tamluk, the college benefits from its serene, green surroundings, offering a peaceful campus that blends rural simplicity with urban refinement.
The college was established during the Quit India Movement, a time of significant political activity in Mahishadal. It was here that the first National Government under British rule was formed, led by local leader Sri Satish Chandra Samanta. Mahishadal also hosted Gandhiji, who stayed for five days in support of the independence struggle. Additionally, the renowned Hindi poet Surya Kant Tripathi (Nirala) received his early education at the college.
