“The oldest and largest university in the state, Gujarat University boasts a lush green campus and acclaimed alumni. However, when one takes a deeper look into the university, it will become apparent that it can only be rated as average.”
Gujarat University is the oldest and the largest in the state of Gujarat. Established in 1949, the university is one of the most important educational institutions in the state. With over 4 lakh students studying at the university, it plays a significant role in the development of the state and the country. All this said the experience as a student at the university can often be disappointing in multiple aspects.
One of the major aspects that students were critical of was the teaching quality. While most of the teachers at the university are highly qualified, they lack teaching experience. The teacher’s lack of experience makes it difficult for students to follow the lectures and the subjects.
The students at the university have also been critical of the curriculum structure. They say that while they are being given theoretical knowledge, the curriculum lacks emphasis on imparting practical knowledge.

The Gujarat University offers a wide range of courses in UG, PG, Doctoral, Diploma and Certificate Courses. The departments of Science, Arts, Commerce, Law, Engineering, Education, Management, Medicine and Health Sciences are present in the university. The academic quality for GU is however, based only on theoretical aspect. They fail to provide a blend of practical and theoretical knowledge base to the students. This creates a knowledge gap for the students, which becomes a hindrance when they step in the professional world.
Since it is a state-run university, the fees for these courses are less compared to the other private colleges in the country. The students find the exams at the university are often difficult to score marks in.
The faculty at Gujarat University are well qualified, highly knowledgeable, experienced, and dedicated. Most of the faculties are PhD holders and have extensive experience in teaching. More often than not, they are very supportive of the students.
However, regarding some faculties, they seem rather serious and are not very approachable. Other students have said that few teachers, while highly qualified, lack experience in teaching.
The Gujarat University boasts a 270-acre lush green campus. The campus area, which was once an arid region, was converted into a verdant campus by planting over 1 lakh seed saplings. Further plans are being conducted as part of the green initiative.
The campus does offer all the amenities for the students, such as separate hostels for girls and boys, sports facilities, WiFi, Medical facilities, Cafeterias, etc. The library at GU holds over 3 Lakh books for the students to read, study and research from. All in all, the campus is structurally sound.
Only Ph.D., M. Phil, post-graduation and K.S. School of Business Management students are given the option of accommodation at the university. The rooms are well furnished and on a single or double occupancy basis for the boys. For the safety of the students, the campus and the hostel common areas are under 24x7 CCTV surveillance.
However, there is a limitation in the number of rooms available to students, and those who are late may find themselves without rooms. The hostels also have a mess attached to them, which is large and hygienic. The students have found that the food is satisfactory. The students are served freshly made food. Special meals are served during the festivals.
Additionally, Gujarat University Canteen is also available to students, staff, and faculty members. The spot is good for getting a bite of food as well as hanging out with friends and peers.
The Gujarat University encourages students to participate in all kinds of sports activities. The university has very good facilities to support the students. The campus has a 400 Metre Track with a Pavilion and courts for Basketball, tennis and other sports are available inside the campus. If the student is interested in sports, they will have a great time here.
The Gujarat University has a dedicated placement cell that works to get the students at the university recruited. In the previous years, there has been a steady increase in the placement rate and the average packages offered. Furthermore, the students at the university have been able to secure placements in different sectors and reputed companies.
However, the placement rate at the university still needs to be improved as a significant portion of the students are left to find jobs for themselves. The packages secured by the candidates are average at best and need improvement as well.
The candidates from the MBA course at the university garner the maximum number of placements, while the students in the other courses at the PG level find it more difficult to get placed.
The student life at GU is great. The university holds several events throughout the year where students get a chance to present their talents. The university holds an inter-college youth festival every year where students from all over the comet come together. The university is also often the venue for various summits and conferences for the benefit of the students.
The university does not prescribe a strict dress code for the students. As long as the clothes are appropriate for the academic environment, students are free to wear whatever they want. However, some courses may require the student to wear formal for specific occasions.
The rules of attendance are followed quite strictly at the university. The students must have a minimum of 75% attendance to be allowed in the term examination.
Gujarat University does invite students from all backgrounds. Students from all the different states of India attend the university. International students from across the world are also welcomed at the university.
