Himachal Pradesh University was established in the year 1970 as a premier institution of teaching and research in the country. It is situated in the Summer hills, a suburban region of Shimala. It covers over 200 acres of lush green and has a unique architectural style. The university is approved by University grants commission (UGC) and NCTE.

International Centre for Distance Education and Open Learning (ICDEOL) in Himachal Pradesh University was initially called as Directorate of correspondence courses. It was started in the year 1971. It was the first to impart instruction at the postgraduate level in social-sciences, humanities, commerce, and teacher training through the mode of distance education. Research studies at M.Phil. the level was also introduced through this medium in the various disciplines.

The center for distance education and open learning offers bachelors, Masters, Diploma and PG Diploma.

The Eligibility for ICDEOL-HPU admissions in various courses are given below:

BA, B.Com	The candidate should have passed 10+2 or equivalent from any recognized boards
BCA	40% marks at the 10+2 level. There will be no age bar and no entrance examination. The admission will be on the basis of the qualifying examination.
MBA	Admission to MBA shall be open to the holder of any first Bachelor's degree of a University established by law in India, at least with 50% marks
MCA	The eligibility of MCA will be graduation in any stream from the recognized university with 50% marks with mathematics at 10+2 level
M.Com	B.Com. or Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or B.A. with Commerce or B.A./B. Sc./M. A./ M.Sc. degree with Economics/Statistics/Mathematics as one of the elective subjects.
