To address the two-decade-long gap in the development of animal husbandry, dairy, and fisheries within Agricultural Universities, the Government of Karnataka took proactive steps to establish the Karnataka Veterinary, Animal, and Fisheries Sciences University (KVAFSU). The university was founded under the Karnataka Act No. 9 of 2004, known as The Karnataka Veterinary, Animal, and Fisheries University Act 2004, which was published in the Karnataka Gazette Extra-Ordinary on February 23, 2004. The establishment of KVAFSU aimed to focus on education, research, extension, and technology transfer in the fields of veterinary, animal, dairy, and fisheries sciences, with an emphasis on rural development. The university’s logo features the slogan "Farmers Friendly and Rural Oriented," highlighting its dedication to improving the farming community.

Prof. R.N. Sreenivas Gowda was appointed as the first Vice-Chancellor of KVAFSU, serving from September 2004 until February 9, 2008. Afterward, Prof. G.S. Bhat and Dr. S. Mallikarjunappa briefly held the position of Acting Vice-Chancellor from February 10 to July 24, 2008. Prof. Suresh Honnappagol succeeded as the second Vice-Chancellor, followed by Dr. C. Renukaprasad, who was appointed as the third Vice-Chancellor on September 21, 2012.

KVAFSU operates as an autonomous institution, governed by a Board of Management that sets policies in line with the provisions of the Act and statutes. The university’s academic and research activities are overseen by the Board of Studies, the Academic Council, the Research Council, and the Extension Education Council.
