“MDU is not advisable for students aspiring to attain a high-quality education and embark on a successful career due to its high student failure rate and the presence of inexperienced teachers lacking practical knowledge.”
Through irresponsible administration and low-quality academics, Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU), Rohtak, has received a lot of complaints regarding unfair exam evaluation and inexperienced teachers. For instance, students who wrote the exam very well were detained, and those who did not even attempt questions properly passed the exam.
Although the flagship course at the university is their B.Tech program, the students who graduated from the very course have said in the past that taking admission to MDU is like taking a highway to destroy a career. Several students are forced to stay back without having the choice of moving forward with jobs and higher education with the number of backlog papers.
The university is infamous for its inaccuracy in the exam results, where they allegedly do not even open the answer sheets before marking. There have been incidents where toppers in one semester failed in the next but, after re-evaluation, scored higher marks than half of the class.
MDU is mainly focused on making a profit and making money by making students pay for the supplementary exams. Therefore, students are advised to ensure that they check thoroughly about their career possibilities before getting admission to colleges affiliated with MDU.
Table of Contents
Established in the late 1970s, the university offers a wide range of courses across various disciplines at undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels. Although the university has had great success in providing quality education in the past, the academic standards have declined.
Even though a plethora of courses in different fields ranging from Engineering to Arts are available at the university, the overall curriculum is disappointing as the education imparted in an academic session is worthless.
Students are constantly failing important subjects, which is supposedly a trick of the university management to get additional money through supplementary exam fees and by increasing the tuition fees. There have been instances where a sudden hike in the course fee was implemented in the second year, which led to a lot of issues.
Though most of the students protested initially, they had to give in and pay the fees due to the harassment from the management. Students who were rigid about not paying the fees were threatened to be rusticated from the course if they did not withdraw their complaint.
As many students filed complaints against the university in AICTE, the association terminated the college recognition. This led to students getting shifted to other universities to continue their courses and promised to pay their fees. However, the colleges and universities who took in students from MDU were not paid any fee.
Besides that, the general tuition fees for the courses offered at the university are affordable to all. The average fees for B.Tech and M.Tech courses are between INR 2,20,000 and INR 1,23,200. For courses like BBA, MBA, BA, BA, and other courses, the average fees range from INR 27,000 to INR 1,00,000.
The faculty members are qualified but lack experience and are narrow-minded. For example, teachers in the Computer Science department have theoretical knowledge of coding. Still, they are clueless about how coding really works, which is of no help to the students. Therefore, the majority of the students learn coding for websites, apps, and other aspects of computer applications by themselves.
As most of the teachers have little to no knowledge about the subjects for Engineering programs, many classes are taught by M.Tech students of the university. In addition to that, there is a huge gap between the students and teachers, where the former does not have the space to ask questions regarding the subjects.
In terms of the teachers for postgraduate degree programs, the departments, especially that of Physics, are backward and narrow-minded. The professors are rude and do not entertain being approached outside classes. Male and female students are not allowed to interact with each other, and if caught, teachers tend to badmouth these students.
The exam sheets are evaluated by these teachers, who mark the answers according to their mood. Hence, several students who are good at studies lose marks and fail exams but, after re-evaluation, score high marks. The teachers are mainly concerned about teaching only the essential topics and methods to obtain marks in the exam rather than developing their skills and applications based on the industrial requirements.
All colleges under MDU have similar infrastructure with the same facilities. The lush green campus of the university is better than many other universities. Located in the metropolis, the students have access to all the necessary amenities.
It can be said that the only factor that makes the overall college experience at MDU bearable is the infrastructure, which consists of gardens with different species of flowers. The campus is clean and is ranked as number one in the Swachchata rating.
The classes are well-equipped with audio-visual systems to help the students get an interactive learning experience. The Vivekananda Library at the university is a great place for students to read and prepare for exams.
The campus has centralized air-conditioning and ample seating areas to accommodate a large number of students. The university also has well-established laboratories for all the required subjects, but a few of the equipment available in these labs are outdated and require maintenance.
Another attractive feature of the university infrastructure is the sports facilities. This includes three different-sized pools, an SSB training center, as well as indoor and outdoor sports facilities.
Spread across 662 acres of land, MDU has enough and more space for the students to hang out and spend time with their friends. Alongside the hostel mess, students also have access to a spacious canteen/cafeteria where different types of food and beverages are served in a clean and hygienic environment.
The university has sufficient hostel facilities for boys and girls on campus. There are ten hostels each for both, and the facilities and amenities provided are basically the same. The hostels consist of spacious, well-furnished rooms with adequate bathroom facilities. Along with that, the hostels consist of reading rooms, indoor and outdoor sports facilities, shopping complexes, etc.
Accommodation to the university hostels is provided to those students who are pursuing their education in the University Teaching Programs and researchers who satisfy the eligibility criteria set by the university. Three out of the ten hostels have dormitories, and the other hostels have shared rooms.
The general hostel charges are affordable to all students. Including all the charges, including accommodation, amenities, medical fees, mess fees, and so on, the total fee comes up to INR 15,210 per annum for boys and INR 13,270 per annum for girls. If the students intend to include additional amenities like an air cooler, room heater, and electric kettle in their rooms, they must pay additional charges per month.
Timely meals are served in a clean and hygienic mess attached to all the hostels. As most of the students at the university belong to North India, the food served on most days is of this cuisine.
To ensure the safety and security of the students, each hostel has a full-time active warden and security personnel. There are certain strict rules to be followed by the hostel inmates to maintain a general decorum in the hostel as well.
Similar to most universities, MDU also has different clubs and committees to nurture the interests and talents of its students. Yet, most of these clubs are inactive due to the lack of enough members. Besides, students at the university are either preparing for their backlog exams or for the first attempts. Due to the unregulated marking scheme, students cannot predict if they will pass or fail an exam.
Apart from that, the events conducted in the colleges affiliated with MDU are similar to one another. Several festivals of different cultures are celebrated on the university campus. Alongside that, the clubs and associations at the university organize different cultural and sports events for the students to showcase their talents.
Most of the students at the university are male students. They belong to different religions, caste, and creed. Career opportunities are available to all students irrespective of their gender and cultural background.
MDU does not have a set uniform for the students. However, the students are expected to follow a basic dress code of wearing modest, decent clothes that are presentable and maintain an overall discipline on campus.
The placement opportunities at MDU yield no tangible results as the top companies and organizations do not participate in the placement drives conducted by the university. Due to the increased number of students who have backlogs in different subjects, hardly any students get good placements. Hardly any good companies are aware of the university as the concerned authorities fall behind in inviting these companies.
Nevertheless, some companies, such as Infosys, Capgemini, and JSW, visit the university to hire students from different departments. According to the previous years’ placement records, the highest salary package offered was at INR 8 LPA, with the average at INR 4-5 LPA.
In conclusion, it is recommended that students who aspire to pursue their careers in reputed companies should re-think their choice of university, as getting placement at good companies through MDU is a rare occurrence. However, the scenario has been changing in recent years.
It can be concluded that MDU is not a great choice for those students who wish to gain excellent academic knowledge and placement opportunities, as the university lacks both. The university has an ignorant management that is careless about hiring experienced teachers and providing quality education to its students.
By failing most of the students in a class to make money by obtaining exam fees, the university puts the future of its students at a halt. Several students are yet to get their graduation certificates from the university due to the number of backlogs.
If getting a degree for the namesake is the only goal, students can join the university. As there is no strict attendance policy, the students can utilize their time here to gain knowledge by themselves. The pros and cons of studying at MDU are enumerated below.
