Placements & Internships :
Job placements are conducted annually starting from around the end of a calendar year and continuing on to the next. Only the students of an outgoing batch are eligible for applying to these placements. Placements for internships are generally not conducted by the University as such. However, students do take up internships through sources outside the campus.
The students of the Humanities streams are generally hired for job roles like Content Writing, Proofreading, Human Resource, Programme Analyst Trainee, by some of the well-known companies like Cognizant, Papertrue, and Adrosonic.
The placement tests conducted by the companies are enough gruelling, to make sure that they hire only the best from the campus. However, since all the job roles are non-technical and entry-level, the average salary ranges around 3 to 4 lacs per annum.
Entrance Exams & Admissions :
Admission to Presidency University is done through their entrance exams, viz. PUBDET (for the Bachelor's courses) and PUMDET (for the Master's courses), that is conducted by the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations (WBJEE) Board.
Eligibility depends on whether or not the percentage of marks of one's last highest degree (Class XII board exams or Bachelor's degree) meets with the minimum marks required to apply to the course they want to pursue. Even if the marks of one's last highest degree is yet to be published, they can still appear for the entrance exam. However, the entrance exam scores will only be valid if the eligibility criteria are fulfilled later.
The general cutoff for a Master's course (when I had applied back in 2018) was 55%. Reservation for SC/ST candidates was according to the State guidelines.
All relevant information regarding the eligibility and procedure for admission can be availed in detail on the University website.
Fees & Scholarships :
Presidency University, [PU] Kolkata Fee Structure. The fee for my Humanities course is Rs 1260 per semester.
The course fee includes the examination fee. The departments that conduct practicals and/or field visits may have a little higher fee structure.
Loans are usually not needed, for students can avail scholarships based on their merit, and relevant to their needs. The notice for every other scholarship is on display on the LCD Screens throughout the Administrative Building, as well as on the University website.
Academics & Faculty :
Classes are held in accordance with the college working timings, which is from 10 am to 5 pm. There are usually 3-5 classes on an average every day for 5 days a week, and each class is 50 minutes long, leaving some free periods and recess time. There are internal assessments or mid-semester exams, and end-semester exams conducted for each paper in the course. Projects and assignments, whether a part of the mid-semesters or not, include writing well-researched academic papers, conducting seminars, conferences, and other departmental events such as fairs. The more innovative and creative the professor is, the more eventful and enjoyable the projects they assign become. Classroom teaching quality is par excellence, not just because of the content taught, but also the methods implemented in teaching. Learning is not just limited to classrooms anymore, both literally and figuratively.
