J.D. Birla Institute (JDBI), Kolkata was established in the year 1962 by late Sushila Devi Birla, wife of eminent industrialist late L. N. Birla named after Smt. Jawahari Devi. The institute has completed more than 50 years and has been providing academic excellence and practical skill-set to the future generation to face global challenges and lead the country into the world of the future.

The Institute has two departments namely, the Department of Science and Commerce that provides various programs. A detailed introduction of the departments is mentioned below:

Department of Science:

All the B.Sc. courses offered by JDBI are based on applied sciences and are geared to meet the emerging needs and challenges of contemporary society as they respond well to the evolving global standards. With a change in attitude towards women’s education and with increasing importance placed on job-oriented education, the field of applied sciences is considered essential today. The department syllabi and curricula are updated under the University Grant Commission [UGC] guidelines. The courses offered by department enable each student with ample opportunities to assess their abilities, aptitudes, and interest and introduces them to a world of jobs and careers. JDBI's Department of Science offers various B.Sc and M.Sc courses.

Department of Commerce:

JDBI built a department of commerce to provide basic training to students in all major subjects, such as Finance, Marketing, Human Resource, Entrepreneurship and Accounting Practices along with training in computer and soft skills. Further, the course also prepares students for professional courses such as MBA, CA, CS, and other courses. Recently the department has been upgraded to include specializations in the final year.  A student can thus opt for any one of the following specializations– ‘Accounting & Finance’, ‘Marketing’ or ‘Banking & Insurance’.

LRC offers a separate Research journal section creating an appropriate environment for a literature survey and research centre.

JDBI Scholarships:

JDBI, Kolkata offers various scholarship facilities. Freeship [waiver of tuition fees] is granted by the Management based on the merit and financial status of the students. JD Birla scholarship can be in the form of freeship may also be granted to students with a proven record of representing the State/Country in any co-curricular or extra-curricular activities. To avail of this facility, students should fill the prescribed form available at the college office and submit the same to the Principal’s office at least two months before the commencement of the next semester along with the required documents. The scholarship is also offered for the topper in higher semesters of all the courses. Students can apply for the scholarship by downloading the application form on the college website.
