Tata Institute of Fundamental Research was established in the year 1945. The University is a National Centre of the Government of India, under the umbrella of the Department of Atomic Energy, as well as a deemed University awarding degrees for master's and doctoral programs. An overwhelming majority of TIFR students go on to pursue academic careers in India and abroad, usually starting with postdoctoral positions. A small number directly join as faculty members, and occasionally a student chooses a non-academic career. Former students of TIFR may now be found among the faculty of practically every major scientific institution in India, and in many places abroad.
The college is now open for various courses at PG and Ph.D. levels. The TIFR University runs Ph.D. and integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. programs in all areas of natural sciences that include Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as well as in Mathematics and Computer Science. TIFR also supports selective M.Sc. programs in various sub-domains of Biology. The graduate program is administered not only in the main Tata Institute of Fundamental Research Mumbai campus but in all the Centres located in other parts of India. Degrees are awarded in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Wildlife Biology, Mathematics, Computers and Systems Science and in Science Education. Typically the Ph.D. program is for five-years, the integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. program is for six years and the M.Sc. program is for two years.
The college offers an integrated M.Sc+Ph.D. course. M.Sc+Ph.D admissions are offered in 4 subjects of Science and Mathematics. Students must hold a relevant B.Sc/BA degree and qualify for the entrance. The courses and specializations are mentioned in the table below.
