The Uttar Pradesh Textile Technology Institute (formerly Government Central Textile Institute), Kanpur, is a leading textile institute in North India, established in 1914. It took its current form in 1937 through the merger of two prominent textile institutes in Kanpur and Roorkee, including the Department of Textile Technology at Thomson Civil Engineering College, Roorkee. Initially offering diploma programs, the institute launched four-year degree courses in Textile Technology and Textile Chemistry in 1958. Originally affiliated with Agra University, it became part of Kanpur University in 1966. In 1976, it introduced a pioneering degree in Manmade Fibre Technology, and in 1985, diploma programs were transferred to Government Polytechnic Kanpur. Since then, the institute has focused on graduate and postgraduate education, including Ph.D. research. In 2005, a Textile Engineering degree was added under the World Bank-supported Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme.
