Veterinary College, Shivamogga started functioning from the academic year 2006-07 with the permission of Government of Karnataka to start new Government Veterinary Colleges at Shimoga and Hassan during 2006-07 as constituent colleges of KVAFSU, Bidar. The mandate of the college is teaching, research and extension in the field of veterinary and animal sciences. The primary object of this college is to produce qualified and competent Veterinarians who could help in increasing livestock productivity in the state, in particular and in the country, in general. The mission of the college is to strive hard and provide leadership in teaching, research and extension education services related to veterinary and animal sciences. The college will keep in pace with the new frontier of science and contemporary developments which are socially and technically relevant to the society. The college has been setup in an area of 157 acres at Sominakoppa village coming under Urban Development Authority of Shivamoga. In this college, adequate measures are taken to assure quality education, as the college is totally governed by the requirements of Veterinary Council of India and guidelines of the KVAFSU, Bidar. Excellence in Teaching, Research and Extension, as well as in Human Resource Development.

The mission of the Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University, Bidar, is to strive hard and provide leadership in teaching, research and extension education services related to veterinary and animal sciences, dairy sciences, fisheries and other allied sciences. KVAFSU is an autonomous academic institution governed by its Board of Management which regulates the policies of the university in accordance with the provision of act and statutes. The University administration also has the support of the finance Committee.
