Situated in the interior district of Midnapore, West Bengal, Vidyasagar University (VU) is one of the oldest Universities in West Bengal state. Offering affordable education for the state's rural population, VU is well known for its quality education and distance education facilities.

Without a doubt, the infrastructure of VU is commendable. VU is known for providing decent placement opportunities for students. However, VU must introduce more professional courses to produce industry-ready graduates for this competitive world.

Variety of Affordable Courses

When it comes to the variety of courses, VU has it all, from general degrees to sophisticated postgraduate courses. VU aims to provide affordable and quality education for its students. Admissions to undergraduate courses are based on VUMAT, 10+2 scores, and merit. Admissions to PG courses are based on entrance exams like CAT, MAT, and UGC-NET.

Humanities, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences courses are famous at Vidyasagar University. VU campus recently became a smart campus. Faculties teach with projectors' help and keep the classes engaging with student interactions. VU curriculum is based on industry-relevant topics, which help students to understand the current industry requirements. 

As VU is situated in the rural part of West Bengal, it attracts students from various backgrounds to pursue their academic dreams. The affordable fee structure and the availability of scholarship facilities are the primary reasons students opt for Vidyasagar University.

Experienced Faculties

One of the main reasons for VU's quality education is its experienced faculties. VU faculties are highly efficient and experienced in their respective subjects. All the faculty members are approachable and maintain friendly relationships with students. Since 95% of the students belong to their native state, there is no communication barrier between faculties and students. All the lecturers will explain topics in the local language to students for better understanding.

VU faculties teach with practical examples. They make use of digital boards and projectors to deliver lectures. Past students think faculty members are punctual and cover the syllabus within the stipulated time. 

Commendable Infrastructure

Recently, the VU campus has become a smart campus. With the introduction of biometric attendance and online leave application systems, VU has taken its infrastructural facilities to the next level. The VU classrooms are well-equipped with digital boards, projectors, loudspeakers, and other basic facilities. 

Students of VU can enjoy the benefits of all the basic amenities provided. The campus is well maintained and under 24/7 CCTV surveillance to ensure students' safety.  Spread over 138 acres, the VU campus has a vast library with CD-DVD ROM, journals, e-books, and non-book material collection, which students can access for their usage. Also, VU provides remote access for students to access the library anytime. It has a dedicated indoor and outdoor sports space for students.

The VU campus life is pleasant and happening. Students are advised to make use of all the infrastructural facilities. Not to forget, the medical facilities provided by VU are phenomenal. VU provides a first-aid facility, ECG facility, blood glucose measuring facility, provision for oxygen, and facility of a pulse oximeter. 

Decent Hostel Facilities

VU provides decent hostel facilities for students and faculties as well. The hostel rooms are spacious and well-equipped with basic facilities like beds, chairs, tables, cupboards, etc. 

The officials look after the hostel affairs and quickly respond to students' complaints and requirements. The mess food at the VU hostel is hygienic and good. The student committee maintains the mess affairs to ensure quality. The only drawback is that the hostel buildings are located outside the campus. However, easy transportation facilities are available. 

Furthermore, students can opt to stay in Paying Guest (PG) rooms available around the VU campus. Ranging from INR 5,000 to INR 9,500 rent, PG facilities are decently good with basic amenities and food facilities.

Moderate Placements

Though former students feel that the placements at VU are different from those in 2016-17, it is pretty decent. Almost 80 percent of the postgraduate management students were placed in 2023 with the highest package of 8 LPA and the lowest of 5 LPA. However, there are only a few placements for a few undergraduate courses.

Courses like BSc Honors, MCA, BCom, BA, BCA attracts very less or no placement opportunities. VU provides proper placement training for its students. Also, VU helps students get their internships to gain physical industry knowledge and prepare them for final placements. The top recruitment firms that visit VU are Infosys, L&T, India Post, ICICI Bank, TCS, and HDFC Bank.

Furthermore, students feel that VU offers fewer professional courses than general ones. The introduction of industry-related courses might attract top recruiting companies for placements.

VU Campus Life

The campus life at VU is happening and jovial. As no strict rules and regulations are imposed, students make memories for a lifetime. As most of the students are from their native state, there are no language barriers. VU strictly prohibits ragging to ensure the safety of each student. 

VU believes in providing material and spiritual education for the holistic development of students. VU blends learning with curricular and extra-curricular activities. Student-oriented clubs and committees conduct activities in which students can actively participate.

VU is particular about the attendance policy. Students must carry their ID cards without fail to punch in their attendance in a biometric system. Students must maintain 75% attendance to be eligible for the final examination. No strict dress code is imposed on students, and they are allowed to wear casual dresses.

Is Vidyasagar University Worth It? 

Commendable infrastructure, quality education with holistic development of students, and decent placement opportunities are some of the primary reasons one must opt for Vidyasagar University. However, VU has more general courses rather than professional courses. This might be a drawback for students who aspire to pursue professional studies.
