Daily Routine Classes commence at 9:00 AM and conclude at 4:10 PM, with two 10-min breaks and one hour recess in between. The curriculum there is heavily test-based. We have internal exams held every two weeks. Each subject has a minimum of two assignments per semester. At the end of every sem, we have university exams. Quality and method of teaching. Professors tend to follow the by the book and to the test approach in teaching. Nothing new beyond our syllabus is taught in our classrooms. Our professors reference each and every topic with the number of marks in exams. Nevertheless, their formulaic way of teaching is easy to follow for even the most academically-challenged student. Overall, the college does provide an ambiance for studying.
Entrance Exams & Admissions :
The most inexpensive and basic way of procuring admission is via the KEAM exam or the merit seat. Once you get there, you will have to pay tuition fees of 75,000 INR. The second and more expensive way is the management/NRI quota. However, you will have to pay 1,00,000 INR for this. I got admitted into this college via KEAM. The cut-off there is very generous. My KEAM rank was 30,000. As per my understanding, you shouldn't get a KEAM rank below 50,000.
Placements & Internships :
Internships, I have no idea about this. Placements are mostly from sundry second-rate IT startups and companies, most headquartered in not too big cities of India. All the branches get placed into IT. However, few notable names such as Sutherland, Infosys etc. come to our campus every now and then. Salary figures The average package of a fresher is 1,00,000 INR CTC. The highest package one can hope to get is 5,00,000 INR CTC. You might see in college brochures boasting 100% placement. This is a lie. In reality, the ones who get placed have no arrears to clear and have a good GPA. Alumni Network From what I heard, Alumni life is quite weak. This is not too surprising – as social life there is pathetic. ( I'll come to this later) However, last year, my branch had organized an Alumni meet-up.
Fees & Scholarships :
Fees structure of Vimal Jyothi Engineering College, [VJEC] Chemperi- Tuition fees for merit seat is 75,000 INR. For management/NRI seat, it is 1,00,000 INR. One can get a merit-based scholarship for KEAM ranks above 20,000 up to 100% per year. There is also a scholarship for financially-challenged minority students. (Muslims/Christians) As far as I know, no loans are necessarily provided you have good 12th grades and not in dire financial straits.
College Infrastructure & Hostel Facilities :
There are 2 men's hostels, 2 ladies hostels and one Post Grad hostel. I stay at the Freshers hostel. From my experience, it is like a prison with a warden watching your every move. The residents are even referred to as inmates, so you can figure. The inmates are subjected to unreasonable rules such as no eating during study time, a curfew of 6:00 PM and no smartphones. Heavy penalties are imposed for seemingly harmless violations. A student can get suspended for leaving the campus without a pass. With that said, however, the one thing about this hostel I can't argue against is cleanliness. Every afternoon maids clean up our washrooms. Hostel Fees Fees are only paid in semester-wise installments. For one academic year, the fees structure is about 27,000 INR. PGs/ other options The PGs near my college are immeasurably cheaper than hostels. Fees there are paid in monthly installments. Per year, the rent is 18,000 INR. They also offer free cooking gas, thereby lowering food cost. They can accommodate up to a 6 people per house. Food. Food is pretty lukewarm. They maintain hygienic standards. However, our diet is not diversified - every afternoon and night, we are provided with rice. Mess halls offer breakfast, lunch, teatime and dinner. The cost per day is 120 INR. Infrastructure There is no extra facility other than the Internet lab. Even then, access is restricted. There is a TV in the study hall.
Clubs & Associations :
The only functioning student society is the IEEE. Any other clubs mentioned in the brochures are for namesake alone. The only pivotal event in college life is the annual TechFest. Students from all branches are expected to create a project. However, it doesn't seem to have many outsiders, given that the college is situated in a village. The cultural festival and sports are for namesake only. In general, social life is pathetic. Most students are morbidly competitive and they talk about only academics.
