William Carey, honored as the “father of modern missions,” was an extraordinary English missionary whose contributions extended far beyond traditional mission work in India. Despite leaving school at 12 to become a cobbler’s apprentice, Carey founded Serampore College in West Bengal, the first degree-granting institution in Asia, established by a royal charter in 1827 to promote arts, sciences, and ministerial training. His scholarly reputation earned him a professorship at Fort William College, Calcutta. He also initiated around 100 rural schools, with a focus on girls' education. A gifted linguist, Carey embraced the Bengali language and studied Sanskrit, enabling Bible translations into several Indian languages. His efforts revived interest in vernacular languages, a legacy acknowledged by Rabindranath Tagore. Carey’s printing press produced the Bible in 44 languages and dialects and laid the foundation for India’s first newspaper, The Statesman. Carey also made significant contributions to agriculture, founding the Agriculture and Horticultural Society of India. He advocated for improved farming practices, crop rotation, and the establishment of savings banks to support farmers. As a social reformer, Carey opposed practices like infanticide and sati, collaborating with Raja Ram Mohan Roy to drive change through research and advocacy. William Carey’s legacy spans education, linguistics, environmentalism, and social reform, all driven by his motto: Expect great things from God Attempt great things for God.
