Table of Contents
VTU Grading System 2025 follows the Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS). As per the CBCS system candidates scoring greater than 90% will have a grade point 10 with an O grade and similarly, a score between 90-80% will have a S grade with a 9-grade point.
VTU grading system will help students to clarify their grades, evaluate their performance, and the steps to calculate their grades after the results are out.
VTU Grading System 2025
VTU marking scheme is based on absolute grading. The grades are converted from marks, and semester results are declared with SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) and CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average).
Score Range (%) | Letter Grade | Grade Points |
≥ 90 | O | 10 |
< 90 and ≥ 80 | S | 9 |
< 80 and ≥ 70 | A | 8 |
< 70 and ≥ 60 | B | 7 |
< 60 and ≥ 50 | C | 6 |
< 50 and ≥ 45 | D | 5 |
< 45 and ≥ 40 | E | 4 |
< 40 | F | 0 |
NOTE: A student obtaining an "F" grade is considered a failure and will need to reappear in the examination. After passing the failed subject in subsequent examination(s), the student will be awarded an "E" grade, regardless of the marks scored.

VTU Choice Based Credit System (CBCS)
Candidates can refer to the table below for the total number of credits for every semester under the VTU grading system 2025.
Semester | Lectures | Tutorial | Lab. Work | Credits (Lec: Instruction: Lab) | Credits (Total) |
Semester I | 4 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Semester II | 1 | 0 | 0 | 2:0:0 | 2 |
Semester III | 4 | 0 | 0 | 4:0:0 | 4 |
Semester IV | 3 | 1 | 2 | 3:0:1 | 3 |
Semester V | 4 | 0 | 0 | 4:0:0 | 4 |
Semester VI | 3 | 0 | 1 | 3:0:2 | 3 |
Semester VII | 0 | 0 | 2 | 0:1:2 | 2 |
Semester VIII | 4 | 0 | 0 | 4:0:0 | 4 |
Tie-Breaking Criteria: As per the Visvevsvaraya Technological University grading system 2025, if two students achieve the same CGPA, the tiebreaker will be determined by considering the number of times a student has obtained a higher SGPA. If the tie persists, the number of times a student has obtained higher grades such as O, S, A, B, etc., will be taken into account for ranking the students in a program.

VTU Promotion Criteria
As per the VTU grading criteria 2025, promotion from an odd semester to the next even semester does not have any restrictions as long as the student meets the attendance requirement. For promotion from an even semester to the next odd semester (i.e., the next academic year), the following criteria apply:
- The student must not have failed in more than four heads of passing in the immediately preceding two semesters.
- The student must have passed all subjects of all lower semester examinations. Both theory and practical subjects are considered heads of passing.
Illustration
- To be eligible for the 3rd semester, a student must not have failed in more than four heads of passing in the first and second semesters combined.
- For eligibility to the 5th semester, a student should have passed all subjects in the 1st and 2nd semesters and must not have failed in more than four heads of passing in the third and fourth semesters combined.
- To be eligible for the 7th semester, a student should have passed all subjects up to the 4th semester and must not have failed in more than four heads of passing in the 5th and 6th semesters combined.

VTU Attendance Requirement
Candidates can refer to the attendance requirement that they need to fulfil as per the VTU 2025 grading system.
- Each semester is treated as a separate unit, and students are required to maintain a minimum attendance of 85% in each course.
- Condonation of up to 10% of the attendance can be granted by the Vice-Chancellor, upon the specific recommendation of the college Principal. Condonation may be allowed for valid reasons such as medical grounds, participation in university-level sports, cultural activities, seminars, workshops, paper presentations, etc.
- The calculation of attendance is based on the number of hours specified in the University's calendar of events. For first-semester students, attendance is counted from the date of admission to the course as per the Common Entrance Test (CET) allotment.
- Colleges are responsible for periodically informing students about their attendance status, enabling them to address any shortage. At the end of the semester, the college Principals submit a list of students who have been detained due to attendance shortage to the Registrar (Evaluation), with a copy to the Registrar.
- It should be noted that the college's failure to inform students about the attendance shortage does not entitle them to appear for examinations as per the VTU grading system 2025.
- Students with attendance shortages in one or more subjects are required to repeat the entire semester. They will not be permitted to progress to the next higher semester.
- Such students must seek re-admission to the same semester in the subsequent academic year.

Internal Assessment Marks Regarding VTU Grading System 2025
Candidates can refer to the important points mentioned below regarding internal assessment as per the VTU marking scheme 2025.
- In each theory or practical paper, a maximum of 20 marks is allocated for Internal Assessment. However, for seminars, the Internal Assessment marks are out of 50.
- In theory papers, the internal assessment marks are based on two tests conducted at the end of the 6th and 12th weeks of each semester.
- The Internal Assessment marks for theory subjects are determined by calculating the average of the better marks obtained from any two tests.
- If a student remains absent for all the Internal Assessment tests, the Internal Assessment Marks for that subject will be marked as AB in the mark sheet submitted to the University.
- The internal assessment marks for Computer Aided Engineering/Drawing in the first year are divided as follows: 12 marks for class work and 8 marks for a test in the same pattern as the main examination. For other drawings and design drawings offered by various branches, the IA marks are evaluated based on sheets and one test in the ratio of 60:40.
- In the final year, the IA marks for projects and seminars are determined by a committee consisting of the Head of the concerned Department and two senior faculty members, including the project/seminar guide.
- The final list of IA marks, including any corrections, is displayed on the college notice board and submitted to the University Examination Section. The IA marks sheet is signed by the concerned Teacher(s), Head of the Department, and Principal.
- Minimum IA mark requirements are as follows: (a) A student must secure a minimum of 50% of the IA marks in Practical/Internship/Project work to be eligible for the corresponding University examination. (b) For seminars, the minimum requirement is 40% of the maximum IA marks as per the VTU grading system 2025.
- Students failing to meet the minimum IA mark requirements must repeat the laboratory work/Internship/project work in subsequent semesters and achieve the prescribed minimum marks.
- There are no minimum IA mark requirements for theory subjects.
