The Gujarat Cancer Society (GCS) was founded in 1960 with an initial donation of ₹5,000, raised through a charity cultural event organized by the Inner Wheel Club of Ahmedabad (Rotary Club). Inspired by this effort, the then Governor of Gujarat, H.E. Mehndi Nawab Jung, proposed utilizing the funds as seed money to establish a cancer hospital in Ahmedabad under the auspices of GCS.
This vision took shape in 1962 with the establishment of the M.P. Shah Cancer Hospital, made possible through a generous donation of £55,000 from Shri M.P. Shah, a philanthropist from London, and land leased by the Government of Gujarat. Over the following decade, this small 40-bed facility evolved into the Gujarat Cancer & Research Institute (GCRI) in 1972, becoming a center of national and international acclaim.
Today, GCRI stands as a 650-bed institution equipped with state-of-the-art cancer treatment facilities. It serves as a shining example of a successful Public-Private Partnership (PPP), showcasing the collaborative efforts between the State Government and the non-governmental Gujarat Cancer Society.
The Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute is a well-respected institution, consistently ranked in various categories by multiple ranking bodies.
