B J Medical College Ahmedabad was the medical school in 1871 later it affiliated with the civil hospital in Ahmedabad. Then the B J Medical School grew and then affiliated with the college of physicians and surgeons of Bombay in 1917. By 1947, the school obtained affiliation with Bombay University and then became B J Medical College and started offering Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Diploma programs under Medical Science. Later in 1951, the college affiliated to Gujarat University.

Pre Clinical Department:
Anatomy:
BJMC's Anatomy department teaches general anatomy like tissues of the body, organs and organ system, Bone types, and blood supply. The department also teaches histology like cell structure, tissues of the body, gross anatomy, embryology, radiological anatomy, surface anatomy and much more. The main goal of the department to inculcate rational and scientific basis therapeutics to acquire knowledge in the above-mentioned categories
Physiology:
Physiology means the study of how the body systems work. The system of the body including the cardiovascular, respiratory, neural, renal, endocrine, gastrointestinal and reproductive systems are examined and thought in this department. BJMC's department of physiology trains the students that how the human organs work.
Biochemistry:
BJMC's department of medical biochemistry strives to provide students with a broad understanding of the fundamentals of the medical biochemistry that operate in health and disease. So, that at the end of the course student shall be able to understand the basic biochemical processes taking place in the body and to know abnormal and pathological conditions, which are related to biochemical defects. It helps to perform accurate and precise quantitative measurements. Para Clinical Department:
Pharmacology:
BJMC's department of pharmacology's aim is to teach both undergraduate and postgraduate students in pharmacology as per contemporary requirements. The undergraduate Pharmacology teaches how to install rational and scientific basis of therapeutics and to teach an essential skill for the selection of medicines safely and effectively throughout their professional career. The postgraduate pharmacology teaches research related to pre-clinical or clinical pharmacology. The department of pharmacology aims to make better prescribers.
Microbiology:
BJMC's department of microbiology is a multi-disciplinary unit consisting of bacteriology, virology, mycology, serology, and parasitology section. The Department of microbiology imparts the knowledge to the undergraduate students about the infectious diseases in terms of their etiology and pathogenesis. Postgraduate courses are conducted for award M.D and a Ph.D. degree in microbiology. the objective of the department is to develop competencies, pertaining to medical and diagnostic microbiology that required to practice in the health care delivery system. Pathology:
The department of Pathology provides the fundamental clinical knowledge service for modern medical practice and health care. BJMC's department of pathology's aim is to provide the students with comprehensive knowledge of mechanisms and cause of disease in order to enable them in achieving depth in-depth understanding of natural history and clinical manifestations, shreds of evidence and end results of disease in term of repair or cure and know the complications better.
Community Medicine:
BJMC's department of community medicine came into existence to attain the objective like apply the basic epidemiological principles to the investigation of diseases, outbreaks, health promotion and disease prevention that contribute to health systems performances as a member of the health team. The aim of the department is to ensure that the medical graduate acquires broad public health competencies needed to solve health problems of communities with an emphasis on health promotion, and disease prevention
Clinical Department:
ENT:
BJMC's department of ENT offers MS. The goal of providing MS in ENT to produce a competent otolaryngologist, who recognizes the health needs of ENT patients and carries out professional obligations in keeping with principles of national health policy and professional ethics. The objective of the department is to teach students of the key importance of the deafness control program in the context of health priority of the company and to develop skills as a self-directed learner to recognize continuing educational needs, use appropriate resources. During the first year, the resident observes the general layout and working, shifting OT patients and participating in the surgery.
Opthalmology:
The department of Opthalmology trains the diagnosis and treatment of corneal problems and offers cornea transplantation and also has a facility for diagnosis posterior segment disorders and providing laser treatments and much more. Department is fully equipped with a modern piece of infrastructure. Local and international conferences are held to students, research activities are conducted.
Medicine:
Department of medicine is one of the largest and most active departments in the B J Medical College, Ahmedabad it was established in 1961. It serves as the tertiary care department for teaching, learning, evaluation, and leadership excellence in the field of medicine. It helps to design, develop and deliver high-quality programs in the field of clinical skills. In view of the subject curriculum, it provides theoretical knowledge, practical and clinical skills, thesis skills, attitude including communication skills, and training in research methodology.
Pediatrics:
The department of Pediatrics of BJMC is to provide competent undergraduate and postgraduate doctors where they recognize the health needs of the community. Studies and Examination curriculum as per MCI regulations and Gujarat university rules
Surgery:
The department of surgery teaches and trains students about open surgery like basic general surgery, head and neck surgery, endocrine and breast. For UG students the department provides five surgical postings and one-year internship training.
Anesthesia:
The main aim of this department is to provide the knowledgeable and skillful anesthesiologist who is competent to anesthetize all categories of patients with medical problems for every type of elective and emergency surgery
Obstetrics and Gynecology:
BJMC's Obstetrics and Gynecology department provides training to the students in basic emergency obstetrics, MTP training, residency for MD and DGO, laparoscopic and open sterilization facility. For students of this department weekly clinical meeting is held, journal clubs, seminars and PG lectures will be held as the academic curriculum.
Psychiatry:
The department of psychiatry to train medical students in basic psychiatry with teaching both didactic as well as practical. The aim of this department is to develop excellent clinicians with a core biopsychosocial approach to diagnosis and treatment. the department offers facilities like Electro-convulsive therapy, Psychological testing, EEG, e-books, and Journals
