Indian Maritime University, [IMU] was established through an Act of Parliament (Act 22) in November 2008 as a Central University, dedicated to play a key role in the development of trained human resources for the maritime sector. IMU is in the category of Professional University intended for fulfilling the requirements of the Maritime Sector. The university has the ability to establish and develop a critical mass of activities in the maritime sector which is the primary advantage of the IMU system. Indian Maritime University, Navi Mumbai Campus was formerly known as the Training Ship Chanakya. T.S. Chanakya is the shore based successor to the Training Ship Rajendra and the grand old lady of Indian Shipping, Training Ship Dufferin, where the training of Merchant Navy Officers in India started in the year 1927. Training on T.S. Dufferin and subsequently T.S. Rajendra continued till the year 1993. After that it was replaced by shore based academy Training Ship Chanakya. It is the first pre-sea training institution in India. Originally, it was under the Directorate General of Shipping, Mumbai in the Ministry of Shipping. In 2008, This campus came under Indian Maritime University. In 2017, it was named as Navi Mumbai Campus.
