Varanasi is the city built on the roots of Medical Education. The history of Medical Sciences in Varanasi began even before then the days of Sushruta. The Institute of Medical Sciences was earlier an Ayurvedic College that got converted into a Medical University in 1960 under the guidance of its founding principal Professor K.N Uduppa. There were 10 departments in this Medical College, nine dedicated to Modern Medicine and one to Indian Medicine. IOMS is an affiliate to BHU and if offers the medical and paramedical courses at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. The campus of the university is huge and lies in the front section of the University. The University’s campus comprises of a medical college, hostels for students and other residents, a hospital, a post office, BHU Vishwanathji Temple, a sporting field, and playgrounds. Just like every other hospital, the hospital area of the campus is mostly crowded but the residential area is peaceful, quiet, and contains many small parks. The Institute of Medical Sciences, Varanasi has three major faculties, Dental Sciences, Medicine, and Ayurveda. This Institute has been ranked 6th all over India.
IOMS was established in the year 1960 and is approved by the Central Council of Indian Medicines.
