Latest Updates for Institute of Medical Sciences, [IOMS] Varanasi

  • 18 December 2024 :

The NMC has released the detailed NEET UG 2025 syllabus PDF on the official website.

Medical education in Varanasi, one of the oldest living cities in the world, dates back to the time of Sushruta around 500 BC, marking the beginning of medical education in India. The 'Sushruta Samhita' is a lasting record of the contributions to medical education that originated in Varanasi. Sushruta is credited as the first to perform cadaver dissections and to describe numerous surgical instruments and procedures. Continuing this historical tradition, medical education in Banaras Hindu University (BHU) began in 1920 with the establishment of the Department of Ayurveda under the Faculty of Oriental Learning and Theology (1922-1927). Inspired by Pandit Madan Mohan Malviyaji, Seth Mathuradas Vissanji Khimji of Bombay donated Rs. 1.5 lakh for the Ayurvedic College, with additional donations from Shri Daya Shankar Dev Shankar Dave of Kathiawar and Bombay.

In 1924-25, the Ayurvedic Aushadhalaya was established with three main objectives: 1) to prepare medicines, 2) to teach Ayurvedic students the art of creating formulations, and 3) to provide affordable Ayurvedic medicines to the public. To support this, a large botanical garden was created to supply raw materials, which continues to fulfill its purpose to this day.

A significant development occurred on January 19, 1924, when Maharaja Sir Prabhu Narayan Singhji of Banaras laid the foundation stone of the Ayurvedic Hospital.

In 1960, the Ayurvedic College was upgraded to the College of Medical Sciences, with Professor K.N. Uduppa as its founding principal. The College of Medical Sciences initially had 10 departments, with 9 focused on Modern Medicine and 1 dedicated to Indian Medicine. In 1963, the MBBS program was officially recognized by both the General Medical Council (U.K.) and the Medical Council of India. The Post Graduate Institute of Indian Medicine, established in 1963, was integrated with the Institute of Medical Sciences in 1971.

Postgraduate medical education, initially an in-service program in 1963, became a formal training program in 1971 with approval from the Visitor of BHU, the President of India. This transformation elevated the College of Medical Sciences to the Institute of Medical Sciences in 1971. The institute further expanded postgraduate education by adding DM and MCh courses in 10 superspecialties in 1976. In 1978, the Faculty was divided into two separate entities—the Faculty of Ayurveda and the Faculty of Medicine—to support their independent development.
