“The Kerala University of Health Sciences is a leading University that offers courses in the Medical field, across the Board. However, the University does need to improve in certain aspects such as placement record, to become the best.”
The Kerala University of Health Sciences is the first health university in Kerala and is a prominent driver of medical education in the state. However it must be said that, like any other university, the KUHS also has room for improvement in several aspects.
One of the aspects that the college lacks in is the student accommodation. There are no hostels in a few of the colleges affiliated to the KUHS, which means students find accommodation outside the campus. This often creates a hassle for the students who stay away from home.
Another aspect that the university can work on is securing better placements for its students. While the university and colleges offer some assistance and guidance in the finding placements for students, the placement rate and quality can only be said to be average.
Table of Contents
The KUHS offers a wide range of courses covering all the major professions in the Health and Medicine sector. With around 130 courses offered, the university attracts a wide range of students. The course structure and syllabus has a good balance between theory and practical knowledge. However some students have commented that the syllabus needs a revision to be more updated.
KUHS is very affordable. Being a state run university, the fees are significantly lower compared to other private universities offering the same courses. Especially for medical courses such as MBBS, MD and MS, which generally are very expensive courses, KUHS is a relatively affordable option.
In general the students at the university value their beloved professors highly. The faculty are well qualified and have a good experience in the profession as well as teaching. As for the student-faculty interaction, most students have said that the faculty is supportive and encouraging.
KUHS is a 65 acre campus, which is sufficient for the administrative purposes and for students. The campus has a lot of green patches, very characteristic of Kerala. Moreover, the campus has all the facilities such as labs, medical centre and canteens. The college's campuses are safe with security and 24/7 CCTV surveillance.
The KUHS Library is stacked with all kinds of textbooks, reference books, national and international journals, periodicals, newspapers, magazines, etc that are available to students. The library boasts of 100,000+ collections.
As per student reviews, the labs at the university are well equipped and are well maintained. The colleges that offer MBBS courses are part of hospitals which means students can get their clinical experience there.
As for the sports complex, the university has facilities for a variety of sports, including football, basketball, volleyball, and cricket. The students of the university have often said that they are able to take part in sports activities which relieves them from academic stress.
Most colleges affiliated to the KUHS offer student accommodation within the campus. The hostels are generally comfortable and well equipped. Mess facilities are also available, which provide students with nutritious meals. However, there are not a lot of food options available for students from outside the state studying at the university.
However, some colleges do not offer hostel facilities. In such cases, affordable PG accommodation is available around the campus, with decent facilities and food. Students can even choose to move into a rental apartment once they have managed to find roommates.
The university placement cell works to find the best placements of the students. As per reports from students, around 70% students have been placed during the last placement cycle and the average packages offered are 6 LPA. This is not satisfactory however, and the university needs to work to improve the placement opportunities for its students.
As for finding internships that are mandatory in some courses, students haven’t found any difficulty. Many students found them with the help of the institutes, while others found them on their own without much hassle.
The campus life at KUHS is exciting and eventful. There are several intra and inter collegial fests that happen throughout the year which students participate in. The fests include literary, socio-cultural, and sports events.
It must be mentioned that some students from certain colleges affiliated to the University have complained of the treatment by the management and the non-teaching staff.
The level of academic stress certainly depends on the course the student is pursuing. Some students pursuing MBBS courses find it often stressful and the exams hard to pass. As is the norm, they are expected to score atleast 50 % marks in such courses.
There is no specific dress code prescribed to the students by the university. However, they are expected to dress clean and modest. The University did make the news in 2021 after the attire for the convocation was changed from the usual black gowns to the traditional Kerala dress.
Most of the courses require the students to have 80% attendance for the theory and practical subjects. The students must fulfil this criteria for them to be allowed to attend the final examination. There is no provision for condonation in case the students are low on attendance.
Most of the students studying at the university hail from Kerala itself. The students attend the university coming from all socio-economic-religious backgrounds. However, since the admission to some courses are done through the national entrance exams such as NEET, a few students from across the country also study at the University.
The KUHS offers a promising opportunity to students who want to start their careers in the medical sector. However, much like any other institute, it needs to improve in certain aspects. The pros and cons of the University are given below to summarise:
