The Maharashtra National Law University (MNLU) Mumbai was set up in 2014 as a recipient of the MNLU Mumbai Act by the Government of Maharashtra making it one of the members of the Consortium of National Law Universities across the country. It functions as a part of this noble chain as a competent, innovative, and professional school that provides legal education at its best and also enhances law as well as leadership. Internationally, the university has created collaborations through MoUs and agreements with institutions like L'Universite Paris Nanterre and the BSEL in Germany for opportunities in exchange programs. MNLU Mumbai is located on the Centre for Excellence in Telecom Training and Management (CETTM) premises. During the earlier years, the university's campuses were held in the TISS, Mumbai. The permanent campus is under construction based on a state-allotted 60-acre plot on which the university would soon shift.

The UG and PG admissions mainly take place through CLAT scores. First, allotment lists are released by the university for UG and PG courses now. B.A. LL.B. (Hons.), LL.M., and Ph.D. courses are operated by the university. For the undergraduate course, CLAT UG is necessary for joining the university, and CLAT PG is compulsory for attending the postgraduate programs. But, entry to a program for a Ph.D. is different and requires processes that are different and have criteria of their own. is altogether different. For admissions to doctoral programs, the University end-semester exam is conducted by MNLU Mumbai while NET, SET, or JRF-qualified candidates are exempted from appearing for the examination. Further, candidates who have completed an M.Phil. with not less than fifty-five percent of aggregate marks or its equivalent examination also get eligible for direct admission devoid of sitting for the entrance test.
