The American College was set up in 1881 by American Christian missionaries. It is an autonomous college affiliated with Madurai Kamaraj University. The college is accredited with an "A" grade by NAAC and is recognized by the Universities Grants Commission. The college offers 32 undergraduate and 20 postgraduate courses with 7 research centers offering M.Phil and Ph.D. courses. It trains students to be responsible global citizens and impart knowledge in every discipline.
