Entrance Exams & Admissions :
At the time of my joining Vemana Institute of Technology in 2013, it was a well-established Engineering college located in Koramangala. The eligibility criteria in terms of joining the institute were not available as a strict regiment. C.E.T rankings for Engineering in various courses starting from Mechanical to Civil were accepted for students who have secured ranks well beyond 65000. Since I joined as a management student, I didn't have to go through any filtering process.
Vemana Institute of Technology had 3 conventional modes of admissions during my entrance period into the institution,
1. KCET (Common Entrance Test)
2. COMEDK.
3. Management.
The typical cutoffs for KCET were pretty lenient as students with really high rankings as far as 65000 were admitted into my course (CSE) especially with the number of rounds that were available.
COMEDK had a lenient cutoff, as well as ranks between 17000 and 40000, were also accepted in the college.
Management had the only criteria being the amount of money ready to be shelled out.
Placements & Internships :
I was a part of various placement training programs organized by the Vemana Institute of Technology in the past 2 years.
The placement officer is a hard-working individual who makes quite a lot of efforts in order to bring companies to the college in order to get students placed into various job positions that are offered by the companies. Technical workshops, as well as soft-skills workshops, are diligently organized by the placement cell. This helps students in sharpening their skills that they need to. However, the college can be more involved in terms of funding more placement related activities in terms of preparing the students for the industry they are going to work for.
Major jobs for the Computer Science department were
1. Software Developer.
2. Tester.
3. Front end and Back end developer.
4. Technical and Non-Technical support.
Average Salaries ranged from 2 LPA to 6 LPA.
Around 55-65% of the eligible candidates who apply for the job get placed.
Fees & Scholarships :
Vemana Institute of Technology, [VIT] Bangalore Management Fee Structure. Fees of Vemana Institute of Technology is INR 1.5 lakhs per year.
KCET students had to pay INR 45,000 per year.
COMEDK students paid INR 1,37,000 per year.
Various scholarship options were available for students. Every semester, the FCD (First Class with Distinction) holders from all departments were awarded various cash prizes. Any students from the SC/ST categories, as well as the OBC categories, were provided with the opportunity of various scholarships and opportunities. Students with parents working in the defense were also provided with opportunities of availing various scholarships.
An average of 50 out of 120 students from every batch availed scholarships during my stay.
Academics & Faculty :
The Daily routine is good an well planned out. Students are not given too much to do and are provided with a schedule that is not very hectic or draining in terms of mental stimulation. Classes begin at 8:30 am sharp and end at 4:30 pm. However every department and class may have varying timings.
The college functions 6 days a week starting from Monday and ending on Saturdays. Any odd Sunday might be declared a working day based on a holiday that had to declared that was initially a working day. Of all departments, Information Science (IS) has the best time-table and department in terms of rapport with students.
The Quality of education can be much better than it already is and they have a huge room for improvement. The teachers need to be well versed with their communication skills and vocabulary as they sometimes put students in confusion with their accents and words. The concepts too are not very well explained and even if they are, it's not enough and requires more in-depth understanding and thought process.
One big negative of some courses here is that a lot of electives that originally are available are not undertaken as there are teachers who are not well versed with the subject and do not even offer them as electives.
My overall experience in terms of education in college was Satisfactory. Students who work hard and study at least an hour on a daily basis can excel here.
College Infrastructure & Hostel Facilities :
Hostels are not available for boys within the campus, their hostel is situated in JC Road which is 10 km away from the college.
Girls have a hostel that is located inside the college, however, the positioning of the hostel is right at the main entrance which kills their privacy.
The college is located right next to the Koramangala B.D.A complex and covers a good area of land and has the RJS school right behind it. RJS is the Reddy Jana Sangha that is the governing body of all RJS institutions including Vemana Institute of Technology. Infrastructure wise, the college is decent. It has well-equipped classrooms with the supply of electricity for at least 6 hours of the 8 working hours. Laboratories are sufficient and are well equipped with all components. However, CSE laboratories could use much better keyboards than those that are available as students might lose a finger due to some keys imitating potholes at times. The library is very well equipped with almost all books that have been prescribed and also has been equipped with a digital library.
The canteen is not available as of now and is in the building phase, however, one can expect good things to happen and the college to be revamped soon as it has been recently remodeled. There is no ground for sports like Cricket, Football, Hockey or teams that require more than 5 players per team.
Clubs & Associations :
There are a few committees that are governing various walks of student talents.
There are cultural committees that are responsible for activities that are dance, emceeing, singing and much more stage events. There are committees that are responsible for social events such as coordinating with NGOs and social work.
There are teams for Football, Cricket, Volleyball, Athletics, Kabaddi, Basketball, Badminton, Table Tennis and Chess.
The college fest named Vemanotsav was the recent large scale attraction that took place this year. It was the first inter-college fest organized by the college. It was very well organized and had a decent number of participating colleges. A successful event all in all.
The college sports day usually takes place in the St Johns Ground on an annual basis and involves events such as athletic events and team games.
