Charpak scholarship, initiated by the French embassy in India, offers financial aid to Indian students aspiring to participate in research projects in France. Candidates with an undergraduate, postgraduate or those pursuing a PhD degree are eligible to apply for the Charpak scholarship 2023. It promotes Indo-French relations and encourages students to improve their research abilities. Selected students can avail of benefits of up to INR 45,000 from the scholarship scheme. The last date to apply for the Charpak exchange scholarship in the Spring session is October 15, 2023.

Objective of Charpak Scholarship
Charpak scholarship has been named after the renowned physicist George Charpak, who received a Nobel prize in 1992 for his extraordinary contribution to physics. The French embassy in India offers Charpak scholarships to deserving students through Campus France every year. Campus France is an agency established by the French government to promote higher education. They help the students find relevant details regarding the courses and institutions offered in France.
List of Charpak Scholarship
There are four types of Charpak scholarship for students studying undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD degrees in public or private institutions in France. The four types of Charpak scholarships are as follows:
- Charpak Lab Program
- Charpak Scholarship's Exchange Program
- Charpak Scholarship's Master Degree Program
- Raman Charpak Scholarship
The undergraduate and postgraduate students can apply to the Charpak research internship program, exchange program and master's degree program. However, students seeking to pursue a Ph.D degree can apply to the Raman Charpak scholarship.
Charpak Lab Program
The undergraduate or postgraduate students on an academic break can participate in a research project/ training at a French institution or laboratory through the Charpak lab scholarship program. It is a brief program, and the duration is from May to July. It is also popularly known as the Charpak research internship program.
This Charpak scholarship program applies to Indian students pursuing a degree in an Indian institution recognised by the government. Charpak lab scholarship program will cover internships for up to two months. If the internships or research projects exceed the two months, they should cover their expenses for the rest of the project.
Eligibility Criteria of Charpak Lab Program
Students with a bachelor's or master's degree studying in India and who want to engage in an internship program or research project during their academic break can apply for the Charpak lab scholarship program. However, they should fulfil the following Charpak scholarship eligibility requirements:
- The candidates must be an Indian.
- They should not be over 30 years of age.
- The candidates should be pursuing a bachelor's or a master's degree in an Indian institution.
- They should have proof of admission from the French laboratory or institution to undertake their research project/ internship. It can be an admission offer or acceptance letter.
- The research project or the internship should be from May to July. The candidates should ensure the program is more than one month and less than two months.
- Candidates who have completed the final semester project or engaged in research in a French partner institute cannot apply to the Charpak internship scholarship program.
Rewards of Charpak Lab Program
This French embassy in India waives the students' fee and grants a monthly stipend for up to three months through the Charpak lab program. The benefits of the Charpak scholarship are as follows:
- The candidates undertaking an internship in labs or institutions located in Paris will receive 800 euros.
- Those undertaking an internship in institutions or laboratories outside Paris will receive 650 euros.
- The embassy will cover the scholas' visa and waive the fee for Etudes en France.
- Some institutions will grant an additional allowance of up to 550 euros to students engaging in internships for more than eight weeks. Hence, the applicants are requested to check the details on the allowances with the host institutions before joining the program.
- Note: The applicants should note that the Charpak lab scholarship program will not cover medical, travel expenses and insurance. They will not assist the students in finding accommodations in France.

The key dates of the Charpak lab program are as follows:

- Declaration of the result: Third week of March 2023
Charpak Scholarship's Exchange Program
The Charpak scholarship's exchange program invites Indian students pursuing bachelor's or master's degree in any stream and who want to participate in an exchange program. The duration of the Charpak scholarship's exchange program is for one to four months, that is, for one semester. The students should be studying in Indian institutions.
The French embassy offers this Charpak scholarship twice a year. The candidates can either opt to enrol for the exchange program from September to December (Autumn session) or January to April/ May (Spring session). They should ensure their Indian educational institution ties up with the French host institution before applying for the program.
Eligibility Criteria of Charpak Scholarship's Exchange Program
Indian students pursuing a bachelor's or a master's degree from any field in an Indian institution can apply to this program. The Charpak scholarship eligibility criteria for the exchange program are as follows:
- The candidates should be Indian nationals residing and studying in India.
- They should not be more than 30 years of age at the time of application.
- The candidates should be studying in a college/university that has a tie-up with a French institution.
- The Indian college/university should allow the candidates to engage in an exchange program for a semester.
- Candidates who want to pursue a final semester project or a research project in a French institution cannot apply to the Charpak scholarship's exchange program.
Rewards of Charpak Scholarship's Exchange Program
The selected candidates of the Charpak scholarship's exchange program will receive the following benefits:
- The French embassy in India will offer 700 euros per month for living expenses.
- They will offer social security coverage to the candidates.
- The embassy will cover the cost of the student visa and waive the Campus France fee.
- They will also assist students in finding affordable accommodation. However, it is subject to availability.
Key Dates for Autumn Season
The important dates for the Charpak scholarship's exchange program are as follows:
- Applications start date: August 21, 2023
- Charpak scholarship 2023 deadline: October 15, 2023
- Declaration of results: 3rd week of November 2023
Charpak Scholarship's Master Program
The Charpak scholarship's master program is for Indian students who want to pursue a postgraduate degree in France. The selected candidates will get an opportunity to pursue a master's degree in any stream under this program. The Charpak scholarship's master program is for one academic year, ten months, from September to June.
There are three types of programs under this Charpak scholarship, they are:
- Allocation Mensuelle d’Entretien (ÂME)
- Bourse de Couverture Sociale (BCS)
- Travel grant
Eligibility Criteria of Charpak Scholarship's Master Program
Interested candidates applying for the Charpak scholarship's master program should fulfil the following criteria:
- The applicants should be Indian
- They should not be more than 30 years of age while applying for the Charpak scholarship's master program.
- The candidates who are currently studying or have studied in an Indian institution are eligible to apply (or) a working professional with up to three years of work experience are also eligible to apply for the Charpak scholarship's master program.
- The candidates should aspire to pursue a postgraduate degree in France.
- Note: However, the French embassy will not offer the Charpak scholarship's master program to candidates who want to study one or more semesters in another country besides France.
- The French embassy in India will exempt the scholars who are completing M1 in France. They can re-apply for funding in the second year to complete their M2. However, the non-scholarship holders who are currently pursuing M1 will not be eligible for the Charpak scholarship.
- Note: The acceptance for this criterion will be subject to the candidate's academic performance in M1 and his/her updated statement of purpose.
Rewards of Charpak Scholarship
The selected candidates will receive monthly allowances, fee waiver and additional benefits. The rewards of the Charpak scholarship's master program are as follows:
Allocation Mensuelle d’Entretien (ÂME)
The selected students under this scholarship will receive the following benefits:
- The embassy will grant 700 euros for living expenses.
- They will waive off the tuition fee of upto 5,000 euros.
Bourse de Couverture Sociale (BCS) Charpak scholarship
- The embassy will cover the student visa and assist them in finding student accomodation and social security.
- They will also waive off the Campus France fee.
- Note: The candidates will receive assistance in finding accommodation for students with priority given to CROUS residencies. However, it is subject to availability.
Travel Grant
- The scholarship will provide a one-way ticket from India to France (economy class).
- Additionally, it also provides a student visa and waives the fee for Campus France.

Listed below are the key dates for the Charpak scholarship's master program:
- Invitation call for applications: January 4, 2023
- Last date for application: March 24, 2023
- Results declaration: End of April 2023
Raman Charpak Fellowship Program
The Raman Charpak fellowship is an exchange program launched to develop the doctoral skills of French and Indian students. The Indo French Centre initiates the Promotion of Advanced Research (IFCPAR/ CEFIPRA) initiates the Raman Charpak scholarship/fellowship. The French and the Indian candidates pursuing a PhD degree can conduct their research work at an institution for research and development or in a university located in India or France. The program can last between two to six months.
The Raman Charpak Fellowship is named after the renowned Prof C.V. Raman and Prof Georges Charpak, Nobel Laureates in Physics. The aim is to encourage students to develop doctoral skills in science, technology and innovation. The Raman Charpak fellowship is also available to French students pursuing a master's degree who want to intern in a university or a research institution in India.
Candidates pursuing a PhD degree in the following disciplines can apply to the Raman Charpak fellowship:
- Atmospheric Sciences
- Earth Sciences and Environmental Sciences
- Materials Sciences
- Physical Sciences
- Chemical Sciences
- Engineering Sciences
- Biological Sciences
- Life and Medical Sciences
- Mathematical and Computational Sciences
Eligibility Criteria of Raman Charpak Fellowship
The host institution for the Indian applications should be in France, and the French candidate's host institution should be located in India. The candidates should fulfil the following criteria to apply for the Raman Charpak fellowship program:
- The applicants should have a master's degree in medicine, science or technology.
- They should not be over 30 years of age.
- The candidates should obtain prior consent or a pre-authorisation from their educational institution.
- Note: Students who have been supported by CEFIPRA, CEFIPRA projects, or those holding a permanent position in institutions/ universities are not eligible to apply for the Raman Charpak fellowship.
Eligibility For Indian Candidates
- They should be Indian
- They should be registered for a PhD degree in a research institution or a university recognised by the Indian government.
Eligibility For French Candidates
- The French students should be residing in France.
- They should have registered for a master's or a PhD degree in an institution or university recognised by the French government.
Rewards of Raman Charpak Fellowship
The candidates applying for the Raman Charpak fellowship will receive monetary support, insurance, airfare and other benefits. However, they should note that the organisers will not provide any support for their family members. The benefits of the Raman Charpak scholarship 2023 are as follows:
- The authorities will offer the candidates a return air flight ticket (economy class).
- They will cover the candidate's travel and health insurance, administration fee for registration and visa (if any).
- The Indian and French fellows will receive additional support to cover the costs incurred for a workshop, seminar, travel and accommodation costs, including their stay in the host countries.
Rewards For Indian Fellows
- The authorities will grant 1,500 euros per month as fellowship support to meet their daily expenses, travel costs, charges for accomodation and social security.
- The fellows will receive additional support of up to 500 euros.
Rewards For French Fellows
- The selected candidates will receive INR 40,000 per month as their daily allowance, travel expense, etc.
- They will also receive INR 45,000 per month for accomodation.
- The French fellows will receive additional support of up to INR 44,600.
How to Apply for Charpak Scholarships?
The candidates should approach the host institutions or universities by themselves before applying for the Charpak scholarship 2023. Then, those who are eligible can submit their application on the Campus France website. However, the application for the Raman Charpak scholarship is a different process. Scroll below to know the application procedure for the Charpak scholarship programs:
Step 1 - The candidates should visit the official Campus France website.
Step 2 - First-time applicants should register themselves by clicking on the register button.
Step 3 - They should provide their personal details and click on the submit button to complete the registration process. They can also register by linking their Gmail or Facebook account.
Step 4 - Next, they should click the apply for a scholarship program button.
Step 5 - The applicants should select their level of study, category and click on the search button.
Step 6 - Now, they can select the Charpak scholarship program.
Step 7 - After selecting the Charpak scholarship, the candidates should fill in the application form and upload the required documents.
Step 8 - Lastly, they should cross-verify the details on the application form and make the final submission.
Application Process for Raman Charpak Fellowship
The candidates can apply for the Raman Charpak fellowship through the CEFIPRA portal. The stepwise application process are as follows:
Step 1: The candidates should visit the official CEFIPRA website.
Step 2: They should write a description of their research project in English (not more than five pages).
Note: The description should include the title of their research and a detailed explanation of how the work will benefit them.
Step 3: Next, they should scan and upload the necessary documents.
Step 4: The applicants should submit the application form.
Note: The candidates can visit the official CEFIPRA portal to know the Raman Charpak scholarship 2023 results.
Essential Documents of Charpak Lab Scholarship Program
The candidates should convert the documents into a Word, PDF or JPEG format. However, the management will not accept the documents in RTF, txt, odt, msg documents, screenshots, zip folders or scans on social media format. The applicants should note that the management will reject applications with improper documents. Hence, they should be mindful while uploading the mandatory documents. Listed below are the documents to submit while applying for the Charpak scholarship programs:
- The first page of the passport (with the candidate's photo and expiry date of the passport)
- Note: Candidates who are obtaining passports after the deadline should provide proof of passport application.
- An updated CV (not more than two pages)
- Passport-size photo
- Attested copies of mark sheets, including bachelor's and master's degree
- Note: The certificates should be attested by a gazetted officer or the head of an institution when the candidate studied.
- Candidates applying for M2 should upload the M1 marks sheet.
- Admission letter from the host institution in France containing the exact dates of the program
- Note: If the candidates do not receive the acceptance letter before the deadline, they should attach the email correspondence showing they are in the process of receiving the acceptance letter.
- Marksheets of SSC (class X), HSC (class XII), bachelor's and master's degree
- A French-language certificate obtained from the Alliance Française (India) or any recognised institution (if applicable)
- Note: The candidates can submit a certificate from the DELF/DALF or any recognised university. Those who studied French as their second language can submit their class X marksheet)
- Statement of purpose
- Note: The candidates can find the format of the statement of purpose on the scholarship form. The statement of purpose should explain why they chose the institution in France, how the Charpak scholarship program would add value in furthering their studies or starting their career, and why they deserve the scholarship. They should ensure the response to each question should not be more than 250 words.
- NOC from the candidate's educational institution in India containing the name of the host institution
- A recommendation letter from the university (not compulsory)
- Prior employment or internship certificate (if applicable)
For Raman Charpak Fellowship
The candidates must submit a proposal in English with the following information:
- Description of the research project in detail (up to 5 pages)
- An updated CV of up to three pages with the latest photo
- Note: The CV should include a summary of their achievements, their publications, etc.
- Recommendation letter from PhD supervisors in the candidate's native lab
- An agreement and a recommendation letter from the proposed supervisor in the host lab (French institute or university)
- A brief of their PhD work (up to 3 pages)
- Proof of publications or research experience
- NOC from the institution head in India
- Scanned copies of the degree certificates, PhD registration letter and passport with front and back pages
- Latest photo
Selection Process of Charpak Lab Scholarship Program
The embassy will intimate the selected candidates through an email. The management will not accept incomplete applications, and they are not obligated to give reasons for rejecting an application. The selection criteria are as follows:
- The management will select the candidates based on their academic merit and their statement of purpose.
- The candidates should ensure their statement of purpose has good consistency and quality.
- There are no cutoff marks or CGPA to qualify for the Charpak scholarship program.
- Knowing the French language will be an added asset. However, it is not mandatory.
