Bijoy Krishna Girls College was established in 1947. It is one of the most renowned colleges of the state under the aegis of the University of Calcutta. The founder principal of the college Sri Bijoy Krishna Bhattacharya started a college with only a handful of girl students in the premises of Bhavani girls school and then later the college was known as Howrah Girls college. With its humble beginning, the college flourished through its journey of more than 70 years. Bijoy Krishna girls college students are also involved in social activities through national service schemes befitting their social responsibilities. This college has always prioritized the pursuit of knowledge. During the long journey of 70 years, this college was awarded the grade 'B++' twice in 2005 & 2016, by the national assessment and accreditation council (NAAC). It has been sanctioned a considerable amount of funds under the Rashtriya Ucchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA 2.0) for infrastructural and IT development.

The college was established in the year of 1947 on the eve of independence. Courses offered in the college are UG, PG, and B.Ed. Bijoy Krishna Girls College admission serves 120+ teachers and 4500+ students. Total 32+ courses are offered in this college. At Undergraduate level, Bijoy Krishna Girls College offers courses in ten different subjects in B.Sc, fourteen in BA, one each in B.Ed. and B.Com. At Postgraduate level, the college offers M.Sc and M.Com in one discipline each and M.A. in four disciplines. Minimum eligibility for admission to UG courses is passing in H.S examination or equivalent and for PG courses is graduation in the relevant discipline. Selection to B.Ed course is done by considering the candidate's academic qualifications ranging from SSC, HSC, Graduation, and Post-graduation. Candidates should have studied English as a compulsory subject in class 12th. Admissions to B.Sc will be granted purely on a merit basis. 10% relaxation is given to SC/ ST candidates in aggregate percentage criteria and 5% relaxation is given in subjects concerned.

Bijoy Krishna Girls College offers PG courses of MA, M.Sc, and M.Com. Deputed candidates are those who are teaching in classes V to XII only. Selection of Deputed will be made on the basis of the period of approved services in the School. In case applicants having equal service in Secondary School, preference will be given to the candidates having higher and better academic qualifications. For selection to B.Ed. course, different weightage is given to different qualifying exams and final admission is given by combining all total grade marks.

Candidates applying, should have done graduation in the relevant discipline with the concerned subject with at least 50% marks. Selection to PG courses is on the basis of the candidate’s performance in the qualifying exam. Of the total seats for B.Ed course, 50% is for deputed candidates and the rest are for freshers.
