Narasinha Dutt College was established in 1924 at Howrah in the residential building of Late I.R. Belillious. It is the oldest college in the district of Howrah and the biggest college in West Bengal. The college has 6000 students in the three sections i.e. Morning, Day, Evening. The college is a beautifully maintained campus with over 2.8 acres, a sprawling garden, a lush playground, and a tranquil pond. The environment of the college is quiet, soothing and suited for the green undergraduate years.
The college is affiliated to Calcutta University. The institution runs for the sake of academic as well as social demands of the changing times. The dept was established in 1964 and it offers UG courses (General/Hons). The dept has three laboratories with a good number of anthropometric, human skeletal materials, primate specimens, equipment for genetic study, enriched seminar library with internet facilities, classrooms with ICT facilities, etc. The dept organizes interactive sessions with students on a regular basis. Every year 60% of the Hons students secure first class in the dept in their academic record.
Most of the students from this dept cleared state as well as national competitive entrance examinations such as NET/SET, SLAT, GATE, civil services, defence services, etc. More than 40% of the students are involved in NGOs.
The Bengali department was initiated with an Honors course in the year 1968. The department is running smoothly with huge vitality and prosperity. The faculty of the dept consists of six full-time, three part-time, and one guest teacher. The faculty members motivate backward students, organizes seminars, workshops, they are also career counseling at personal.
The dept of commerce offers UG courses [general/honors]. The dept has started the courses for the boy students in 1961. In 1972 the dept started offering a general course for both boys and girls. In 2012 the college opened Commerce (Hons) for girls students. Many of the students from the dept has won prizes for different sports and games.
The dept was established in 1924. In 2007 NAAC recommended the department to open M.Sc in Mathematics (self-financing) for 20 seats. M.Sc in Mathematics under the affiliation of Calcutta University was first started in this college.
