Indian Institute of Mass Communication was established on August 17, 1965, by Smt. Indira Gandhi, the Institute commenced with a small staff, consisting of two consultants from UNESCO. In the beginning, the Institute majorly organised training courses for Central Information Service Officers and carried out research studies on a small scale. Then, an international training programme, the Postgraduate Diploma Course in Journalism was started in 1969.
Many specialised short courses of one week to three months’ duration were eventually started by the Institute to meet the training requirements of communication professionals working in various media profiles of the state and central governments and public sector organisations. It has expanded multifold with the time and now it offers regular Post-graduate Diploma Courses also.
