Indian Institute of Remote Sensing was established in the year 1966. It was formerly known as Indian Photo-interpretation Institute (IPI). is a premier institute for research, higher education, and training in the field of Remote Sensing, Geoinformatics and GPS Technology for Natural Resources, Environmental and Disaster Management under the Indian Department of Space. The training and education programs conducted by the Institute include Post-graduate Diploma (PGD) in Remote Sensing and GIS in eight disciplines, M.Tech. (RS & GIS) in eight disciplines conducted in collaboration with Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, and M.Sc. and PG Diploma (PGD) in Geoinformatics conducted in collaboration with the Faculty of Geo-information Science & Earth Observation (ITC) of the University of Twente (UT), The Netherlands. The IIRS admission application process conducted by IIRS is online as well as offline.IIRS Dehradun one of the Top Universities in Dehradun.
The Institute has a strong, multi-disciplinary and solution-oriented research agenda that focuses on developing improved methods/ techniques for processing, visualization, and dissemination of EO data & Geo-information for various societal applications and a better understanding of Earth's system processes
The Institute's building at Kalidas Road, Dehradun was inaugurated on 27 May 1972.
