Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram was established in 2007 and it is declared Deemed to be University from the University Grants Commission [UGC]. It is an autonomous body which is under the Department of Space, Government of India. The institute's first chancellor was Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. This institute was formed with the idea of producing high-quality manpower for the Indian Space Research Organization [ISRO].
The Institute is offering high quality of education at undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and postdoctoral levels on areas with special focus to space sciences, space technology, and space applications. The institution has a mission of creating a unique learning environment enriched by the challenges of Space exploration, by nurturing innovation and creativity. It is one of the leading space studies institutions of the country. In 2024, IIST was ranked 51st among engineering colleges by NIRF ranking, by MHRD.
It is a fully residential campus, that has around 560 undergraduate students, 160 M.Tech and MSc. students, and over 100 PhD scholars. It is located at Valiamala, about 25 kilometres from Thiruvananthapuram city, on the way of famous hill resort of Ponmudi. It has two campuses planned spread over an area of 100 acres situated close to foothills of Sahyadri Mountain Range.
