Indian Maritime University is set on a 20-acre gorgeous seaside property on the outskirts of Chennai, a bustling cosmopolitan city. The wonderfully crafted edifice, an architectural marvel, is nestled amidst lush green sylvan surroundings after a 25-kilometre trip along the East Coast Road, hugging the shoreline. The academic building, hostel, residential, and recreational amenities are all located on the large campus. The academy was founded in 1985 with technical aid from UNDP/UNCTAD to provide high-quality training. It has an ISO 9001:2000 certification and an ICRA grade 1 rating. It provides state-of-the-art training facilities for both port and marine employees.

- Classrooms- The university classroom contains a state-of-the-art Ship Maneuvering Simulator that can generate images of various types of ships and ports for personnel training. The campus has 23 classrooms, 11 of which are air-conditioned.
- Library- It offers one of the best maritime libraries in the country, with over 8,000 volumes of journals and publications from the maritime industry to supplement students'/participants' academic studies.
- Hostels- The hostel facility has a capacity of 250 people. It is big and equipped with all the necessary amenities.
- Sports- Outdoor and indoor games, as well as a swimming pool, are available to residents for physical activity.
- Health Centre- A medical centre is available for routine health checks and emergencies.
- Guest House- The campus also includes a guest house and staff quarters.
