Indian Maritime University(IMU) was formerly known as the Training Ship Chanakya. It was later on renamed in the year 2017. The training academy had received IMU's status earlier in 2008. It is the first pre-sea training institution in India and is UGC-approved. It is governed by the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India.

The training programmes at IMU Navi Mumbai are designed to inculcate officer-like qualities and a high sense of discipline amongst all the students.
