Indian Maritime University (IMU), a Central University based in Chennai, India, was established in 2008 through the Indian Maritime University Act. The university focuses on providing education and training in various maritime disciplines, including navigation, marine engineering, maritime law, and marine management.
IMU's commitment to excellence is demonstrated by its ISO 9001:2015 certification, which reflects its ongoing legacy of innovation and its dedication to offering world-class education and research opportunities.
The Mumbai Campus of IMU was formed through the merger of two prestigious institutions: the Lal Bahadur Shastri Centre for Advanced Maritime Studies (LBS CAMSAR) and the Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI). LBS CAMSAR, founded in 1948, provided post-sea training to merchant navy personnel. In 1949, the Government of India established the Directorate of Marine Engineering Training (DMET), which included two institutes, one in Mumbai and the other in Kolkata. The Mumbai-based DMET was renamed MERI in 1995, completing the integration into IMU's Mumbai Campus.
