The National Institute of Nutrition was established in 1918 at Pasteur Institute, Tamil Nadu by Sir Robert McCarrison. It was initially set up as a Beri-Beri Enquiry Unit in a single room Lab. It transformed into a Deficiency Disease Enquiry Unit within 7 years. In 1928, it transformed into a Nutrition Research Laboratories which was full-fledged. In 1958, it was shifted to Hyderabad and in 1969 it got its present name.

Currently, it has two centers functioning under it namely Food & Drug Toxicology Research Centre and The National Nutrition Monitoring Bureau. The activities of the institute are broad and cover every area of nutrition & food.

At present, the college is situated on the campus of Osmania University. It has a large number of scientists from various disciplines. It has been recognized by several universities as a centre for Ph.D programs. It has also been recognized as a centre for conducting ad-hoc training as well as advanced courses in laboratory animal science and nutrition.

The National Institute of Nutrition courses includes M.Sc, a PG Certificate course, and an Annual Training course. The M.Sc course is of 2 years duration. The PG certificate course has a duration of 10 weeks and the duration of the annual training course is 7 weeks.

 The NIN Library contains various books related to Nutrition & Health. It has about 18,082 books in total along with 37,543 volumes of Journals, 13,371 reports, and 383 Indian & foreign journals. 

The college has spacious buildings. It has well-equipped laboratories. It uses modern and sophisticated equipment. The college also provides computer facilities. It also has a Nutrition Museum which is an important teaching tool that highlights the various aspects of food and nutrition.

The fee for M.Sc in Applied Nutrition is INR 20,000 per annum. It is INR 10,600 for central quota and INR 9,600 for the state quota.

The fee for the PG Certificate course and the Annual training course is INR 10,000.

NIN Achievements:

The college throughout its life has contributed to the field of Nutrition Science in many ways. The achievements are as mentioned below.

  1. The institution has been the 1st to describe Burning Feet Syndrome, a clinical condition, and prescribed its treatment.
  2. It has contributed to the assessment of nutritive values of commonly consumed Indian foods.
  3. The institution was the first to propose a manual that contains information about the diet and physical activities that Indians have to follow in order to ensure optimal health.
  4. NIN was the one to propose that the iron folate supplementation should be taken by pregnant women and preschool children as a prophylactic measure.
  5. Operational research studies where conducted by the institution on Integrated Child Development Studies to find out its impact on the nutritional status of children, the results of which helped in strengthening the program.
  6. The institution has conducted various studies on food toxins.
