The National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS) was established through Act 27 of 2005 by the Kerala State Legislature. This Act also facilitated the merger of the National Institute for Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS), which was founded by the Bar Council of Kerala Trust in 2002, with NUALS. In 2008, an amendment was introduced to streamline the powers and functions of the University authorities, ensuring active participation from the Government of Kerala. NUALS is recognized by the UGC Act and is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). The primary objectives of the University are: (a) to promote and disseminate knowledge of law, legal and judicial processes, and professional legal education, and to highlight their role in national development; (b) to cultivate a sense of responsibility in students and researchers, equipping them with skills for advocacy, legal services, legislation, and law reforms; and (c) to drive legal and judicial reforms essential for strengthening India’s justice system. The Visitor of NUALS is the Chief Justice of India (subject to consent), while the Chancellor is the Chief Justice of Kerala. NUALS’ campus is located in Kochi, the industrial hub of Kerala and the seat of the Kerala High Court, spread across 10 acres within the Kinfra Hi-Tech Park in Kalamassery.
