College Infrastructure & Hostel Facilities :
Their are 4 hostels ( 2 in campus and 2 out of campus ). The first year batch is usually kept out of campus. From second year onwards, allotment into the hostels in the campus is done. The hostels are quite good. Accommodation is 3 persons in a room. From 3rd year, 2 persons per room are allocated. The fees for hostel is Rs.4000 per annum(pretty affordable).
Accommodation other that that provided by college may be quite expensive in an area around the college. Flats can be rented out by sharing the rentals(around 35-40 k per month).
As for food, there are 3 canteens available. The quality of food is very good. A meal in the canteen would cost around ₹30 per person.
The quality of classrooms is good. Labs are well equipped. Libraries have a number of books. The libraries have A/C.
Their is Boys common room and Girls common room used for reading and dining.
The SGMC campus has free WIFI facility.
There is also an auditorium available for guest lectures and other college events.
Entrance Exams & Admissions :
For students of Maharashtra the best option was CET held by the state, but now as all exams have been clubbed under NEET, it is to be cracked to bag your seat at King Edward Memorial Hospital and Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College.
A good rank ( under 2000 AIR ) is enough to get a seat here. At my time , I took state CET, NEET, and AIPMT.
The cutoff for MBBS in my college GSMC is around 580+, the scores needed will further depend on the cutoff for respective categories(OBC,ST,SC,etc) to which a particular student belongs.
Placements & Internships :
Internship is a must to obtain your degree and this applies to all medical colleges. The stipend at SGMC is almost ₹7000 per month.
Most students after obtaining their MBBS degree will apply for higher education (MD/MS,etc).
For those who will directly practice after their MBBS the average pay scale is around Rs.50,000(private practice) and much less i.e around Rs.20,000 if you join elsewhere(other private healthcare providers).
Fees & Scholarships :
The course fee per annum at SGMC, Mumbai is around 75k-90k. This too depends on your category(Freeship scheme of the government is available).
Government offers scholarship, also one can apply for a number of other scholarships like TATA scholarship programme, etc. For getting a scholarship like that provided by TATA, one has to ace the final exams. The first 3 rankers are usually selected (depending on the rules of the scholarship).
The cost of education is pretty low as compared to that which needs to be paid in private medical colleges. But for those who cannot afford, education loans are being provided by banks like central bank of India, ICICI Bank, etc. They are quite easy to avail if you have necessary documents at hand.
Academics & Faculty :
The classes at SGMC start at 8 am and are till 4:30 pm. Their are lectures in the morning and practicals in the afternoon.
Clinical postings start from second year onwards(timings 9 am- 12 am).
Regular class assessment exams are held by the respective departments in the form of PCTs(Part Completion Tests). Semister wise exams are held by the college.
We get the best quality of teaching by the best of the staff. The method of teaching is by use of projectors( slideshow) and thier explanation by the teachers. The overall experience is great. Things are taught in a way that we can correlate them with our clinical counterpart.
Clubs & Associations :
The life at SGMC, Mumbai is fun.
The activites in the college help us to develop in all spheres of life.
There are cultural events held throughout the year. Aavishkar is the cultural fest held in the college in the months of February. It includes educational activities like paper presentation, guest lectures by eminent doctors, sport events and other fun activities.
