Hostels
Students who do not live with their parents, near relatives or guardians are expected to live in hostels approved by the College. There are two separate hostels for boys and girls run by the College and their capacity has been increased with the addition of new buildings. Vegetarian and non-vegetarian food is available. These hostels are governed by the rules and regulations framed by the Management.
St. Aloysius College Hostels are centres of living, learning and integral growth for the PU, Degree and PG students studying at our Institutions. Apart from providing facilities for board and lodge for college students, these Hostels strive to create a healthy and conducive atmosphere for study, prayer and healthy interaction among the inmates. They are certainly not places for pure relaxation, fun and enjoyment. In that sense they are not to be treated as homes, because generally, in a home environment, a certain sense of casualness, informality, dispersed atmosphere, elastic timetable, regular adjustments prevail along with an attitude that conveys, ‘it’s alright’ in most situations. All the conveniences provided at home cannot be replicated at our Hostels, neither do the hostels promote ‘familial relationships’ between the Staff and the students. Those who seek admission to this hostel are urged not to expect a casual family atmosphere in the Hostel and are required to get accustomed to a much more ordered life.
Order and discipline are essential ingredients of common life at these Hostels and they create an atmosphere for effective learning. It is to enhance the quality of living and learning and to aim at excellence that the following rules are framed. They are liable to be revised periodically and made more relevant to the inmates.
Spiritual growth
Our hostels place great importance on the value of spiritual formation of our students. All the Catholic students have Holy Mass thrice a week and Rosary prayers every evening. They are also encouraged to attend daily Eucharist in our college chapel.
We are thankful to all the Jesuit Fathers for their involvement in and concern for the spiritual well being of the hostellers. We thank them for being available to offer Mass and for their support and inspiration. Inter-religious prayer service for all the students practicing different faiths is also held on every Thursday.
Sports
The hostel offers a range of recreational and sports facilities to all our students. Badminton, Basketball, volley ball, throw ball, table tennis and other indoor games facilities are provided to the students. We are grateful to the Management for providing space and facilities of the Primary School for this purpose.
Earnest attempts have been made to accommodate deserving students. A large number of students have been given concessions in keeping with our option for the marginalized.
Library
The College Library was established in the year 1880 along with the establishment of the College. The main building of the College was commissioned for use in 1885 and the library was shifted to one of the halls of this building in 1886. During the centenary celebration of the college in 1980, a centenary memorial extension to the main building was constructed and the library was shifted to this new building where it is presently located. It occupies a total area of more than 14,000 sq ft and is spread over three floors. It has a seating capacity for 250 users at a time.
Over the years, the library has stacked with carefully chosen books for the use of the staff and the students. At present, the library has over 85000 books and bound volumes of journals covering a wide variety of subjects. It also receives over 200 current journals on various subjects. It has access to 6,659 full text journals in e-form and around 10,000 journals with abstracts. 83,000 e-books are available on n-list digital library facility and 30,00,000 e-books on World eBook Library.
