Stella Maris College was set up in 1947 in a small one-story building with 32 college students in Santhome, Mylapore. In the year 1960, the college moved to its present campus "The Cloisters" in Chennai. The college is set up and run by the Society of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary. Stella Maris College has been presented with the Potential for Excellence in April 2016 and in the same year it also conferred the title "The Pride of Catholic Church".
