Overview

Syamsundar College: A Legacy of Excellence and Growth

Founded on 12th August 1948 by Raibahadur Bisalaksha Bose, a prominent social worker from Shyamsundar village, Syamsundar College was established with the support of leaders like P.C. Sen, Abdus Sattar, Kalipada Mukherjee, and freedom fighter Jadabendra Nath Panja. P.C. Sen, the first Governing Body President and later Chief Minister of West Bengal, played a vital role in its development, along with Shib Mohan Bose, the college's inaugural Principal. Initially offering Arts, Science, and Commerce at the Intermediate level, the college was upgraded to Degree level in 1956, becoming a Government-Sponsored Degree College with the efforts of Fakirdas Bandyopadhyay and Dr. B.C. Roy.

The institution embraced co-education in 1967 and celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1998, marked by the construction of the Golden Jubilee Building. Further milestones include NAAC accreditation in 2005 (B+ status), its Diamond Jubilee in 2007, and the 70th-anniversary celebrations in 2017-18, featuring international seminars. Recent advancements include launching an M.A. in History under Burdwan University, introducing new disciplines like Philosophy (Hons.) and Defence Studies, and constructing a four-storied annex building.

Situated amidst tranquil greenery, Syamsundar College has nurtured many notable alumni and remains a beacon of knowledge for rural Bengal. With a motto that underscores the transformative power of education, Ya Vidya Sa Vimuktaya (Learning Leads to Emancipation), the college continues to blend tradition with modernity, fostering a strong bond among students, faculty, and staff. Though Bisalaksha Bose envisioned it as a university, the dream awaits fulfillment, hampered by logistical challenges. Collaborative efforts with institutions like M.U.C. Women’s College and Krishnanagar Women’s College mark its ongoing journey toward progress.
