The normalisation method is used for the creation of the JEE Main rank list. Candidates are advised to note that the NTA develops the Common Rank List (CRL) to create the rank list. Moreover, the JEE Main session 2 result has been released by the NTA on Apr 24, 2024.
Which JEE Main 2024 score will NTA use for the common rank list? NTA uses the normalisation method to create the JEE Main rank list. The NTA has released the JEE Main results for Session 2 on Apr 24, 2024 and common rank list will be released soon. Further, the marks of paper 1 and paper 2 are obtained through different methods. Additionally, there are tie-breaking rules for the JEE Main exam 2024.
How is the JEE Main 2024 Rank List Created?
There are thousands of candidates appearing for the exam; therefore, the JEE Main rank list is created based on the percentile score of the candidate.
There are some measures that NTA employs to calculate the percentile score to derive the rank. Here are some of the situations:
- Candidates appearing in both JEE Main 2024
- Candidates appearing for any one session for JEE Main 2024
- A higher score from both sessions will be considered.
- The scores for the respective sessions will be considered.

How is the JEE Main 2024 Score Calculated?
NTA devises different methods to derive the JEE Main 2024 score for papers I and II. The percentile score is employed to derive the rank.
The percentile score denotes the percentage of marks that the candidates have scored is equal to or below (same or lower score) the percentile in the exam.
Hence, each session's topper (highest scorer) will score the same percentile, which is 100, and the marks obtained between the highest and lowest are also converted into a proper percentile.
Further, instead of publishing the students' raw marks, the percentile score will be converted into the normalised score; this, in return, helps each candidate secure a position according to their merit.

The Process of Calculating Candidate's Percentile Score for JEE Main 2024 Paper-1
The candidate's percentage score will be considered the normalised score and will be calculated up to 7 decimal places. NTA will not publish the raw score of the candidates.
The method employed to derive the percentile score for JEE Main 2024 is as follows:
100 * Number of candidates who appeared in the ‘Session’ with raw score ‘Equal To Or Less’ than the candidate/Total number of the candidates who appeared in the ‘Session.' |
Furthermore, the JEE Main 2024 paper 1 and 2 scores will be calculated using different methods.
Tie-breaking Factors while Preparing JEE Main 2024 for Paper-1 Rank List
The JEE Main 2024 paper 1 rank list will be created following the percentile method.
However, here are some of the methods that are usually considered while resolving any tie-breaking situation while formulating the rank list;
these are called the inter-se-merit guidelines:
- Candidates with a higher percentile score in Mathematics will be given a better rank.
- If the tie remains unresolved, the candidates with higher percentile scores in Physics will be awarded a better rank.
- If the tie remains unresolved, the candidates with the higher percentile score in Chemistry will be awarded a better rank.
- If the tie is still unresolved, the candidates are older to be preferred.

Process of Calculating Candidate's Percentile Score for JEE Main 2024 Paper-2
The JEE Main 2024 paper 2 is held in two shifts. The raw scores of the candidates will be transformed just like paper 1. NTA will not publish the raw score of the candidates.
Tie-breaking Factors while Preparing JEE Main 2024 for Paper-1 Rank List
The paper 2 rank list for JEE Main 2024 will be presented by merging the raw scores of the two attempts. In case of a tie, inter-se merit will be considered according to the following criteria:
- Candidates obtaining higher marks on the Aptitude Test in Paper 2 will be considered.
- If the situation persists, the candidates obtaining higher marks in the Drawing Test in Paper 2 will be considered.
- Suppose the situation still exists; the candidate will be considered older in age.
- If the resolution is not possible after this criterion, candidates will be given the same rank.

Important Points of JEE Main 2024 Common Rank List (CRL)
NTA creates the common rank list for the candidates of JEE Main 2024 based on their performances.
However, there will be a separate rank list where the category of the candidates will be mentioned, i.e., GEN, GEN-PwD, OBC-NCL, OBC-NCL-PwD, SC, SC-PwD, ST or ST-PwD.
- The category ranks will be separate from the JEE Main 2024 common rank list. The list will consist of the same category candidates assigned ranks based on their performance in JEE Main 2024.
- Allotment will be based on CRL, also called the common rank list.
